If I tried, I couldn't forget

As age continues to overtake my eyes and body, my mind and memories too begin to dim.

I was not 'in country', but in Korea, '65 - '67.

I never knew why because I had enlisted at 17 ready to kill the gook bastards.

So much happens in an older boy's/young man's life at that age ... and then we get older.

My Mom, a WW2 veteran, had saying that summed it up:

“Old age is cruel.”

Now, these many years later, my sibs and I have a code for it: “OAIC,baby!”

I was not 'in country', but in Korea, '65 - '67.

A short story for you "Era" Vets.

The local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club held an annual chapter Memorial Day weekend at a local fish and game club in the 1980's prior to the "Rolling Thunder" DC runs. Our local band was hired to play then and the first year we were told that any vet in the group is to "wear his colors" a fatigue shirt etc. Three of us were "Era" vets and felt uncomfortable about it in the company of all these "Combat Vets". We started without the shirts and at the end of the first song, two bikers stopped us and asked where our colors were. We told them our concerns and got the biggest sermon of how we served and it didn't matter to them. "We all stepped up and that was all that mattered"! We went back to our truck put the shirts on and when we got back on stage.....what an honor it was we were given then with their cheers and ovations.from 500 club members. For the first time since I came home in 1970, being a Veteran was a good thing.

My greatest respect to VN Combat Vets for what they went through and now being honored after all these years. I would never think I could endure what they went through. But, remember,

"We all stepped up and that was all that mattered"!

God Bless our fallen Brothers,
USAF '66-'70
