This was the Year of the Middle Class -- as in, its falling incomes, loss of job security and anger. The global economic forces fueling the decline, such as foreign competition and computers, have been well reported. But what about cultural factors? Is the middle class going down partly because it stopped acting middle class?
For those who remember the American middle's golden era of 40 years ago -- or see it reconstructed on TV dramas -- the cultural losses are pretty shocking. The middle managers in "Mad Men" returned to orderly homes with tidy children, even as their personal lives spun into chaos. While comfortable, their houses were modest by today's McMansion standards. That's because they were living within their means.

What are we fighting?
We need to be absolutely and stark raving clear about that. What ARE we fighting? Romney? Paul-bots? Clinton? what?
I posit we're fighting against forces arrayed against what the philosophical concept of that this Republic is all about.
We're outnumbered and we don't have the artillery that the enemy has.
We have no cannon, we have no shoes, we have no cloaks, heck we have no hard-tack (except that mealy-worm infested), and its seemingly -20 Deg., but I implore you - for the children's sake - to stick with it and fight to the end; what's it worth living for?
Stalin & Kruschev were indomitable. Hitler was indomitable as was Musolini. There were other indomitables also, Pol Pot, eh?
What I want you to take away from this - here and now - is that the Constitution of the United States of America is indomitable in the face of adversary (in and only so far as WE - as The People conceding authority to act on our behalf - actually want to defeat the adversary).
WE ARE INDOMITABLE if we have a common vision.
P.S. VETSCOR was the ONLY topic available when I posted this. Given that, I actually wonder if I'm on the right venue (as a result I doubt FreeRepublic has what's necessary).
Froma Harrop???? Who the heck is Froma Harrop?????
People, in general, aren’t convinced of the danger that America faces, aided by the media and political parties. It’s why the message of responsible governship hasn’t taken hold of the public imagination.
Unfortunately most politicians don’t lead the population, they just stand in walk in front of the parade with a baton.
You read the dang article and tell me what's up with what. Either she's a bloviating liberal or something else is true.
I'm telling you this now: we did not just get our cherries busted (its something much more sinister).
P.S. I've other things that I'd like to post - having even darker & sinister tone - but posting of such material is prohibited by FreeRepublic legal injunction. I'll state that Nolan Finlay & George Will are two sources of that material in desire of mine to post.
I believe you.
When’s the last time you dug into my tag-line? Have you ever compared the philosphy therein stated with ANY of the contemporary “conservative” candidates.
I tell you we are doomed, unless...
I know the liberal game on this. When things fall apart, they will blame the Republicans for not stopping the decline.
I’ll check your tagline, when I have access to a computer.
....IT’S YOUR FAULT...someone has to take the blame for big government WHEN IT FAILS!
Guess who gets to ruck up and press off?
I'm just saying: there are issues here.
I really do NOT want to see this election to be about smoke and / or mirrors.
Who'm I foolin'? When was the last election that weren't true, eh?
I disagree.
WE get the government that WE deserve.
The Middle Class voted for its own decline on 2008-11-04. May God damn the Middle Class!
It’s the privilege of the Democrats to make big troughs, so everybody can feed. It’s the responsibility of Republicans to ensure the troughs do not get too big or deep and that they don’t go empty.
If the Republicans don’t try and control spending, the Liberals can escape responsibility by blaming the Republicans for empty troughs.
That’s how the game is played and why Republicans will be left holding the bag.
"Mad Men" premiered on July 19, 2007. It's got nothing to do with July 19, 1967. The sixties produced its own share of selfdenigration, if you would care to look it up. Plus, they put a man on the moon. Did you see the NYT Science Times today, Jan 10, 2012? It has a piece about how the Apollo landing sites should be preserved as heritage sites, or what not. Yeah, they'll be preserved all right ... idiots.
What we are witnessing is the inevitable consequences of the me generation.
NOPE....thats the line they always use.
It’s not the peoples fault..it’s one of those END conversation lines
just like “they all do it” is a line used to stop the conversation.
I disagree. The middle class has benn assisting its own destruction since 1980.
Not to blame Reagan for this explicitly, but the American public should have been alarmed about the debt when it first passed a trillion dollars.
later
I don't care if you fought against 20 Falluhja insurgents - simultaneously - while you were on break (calling in air-strike after you had the situation wrapped up).
What's going to break your heart is the carnage wrought against American citizens themselves (in part because they're so stupid). What happened at Mt. Ranier National Park & in Wilmingon, DE don't mean nothing.
SO there are the have's, and those less than that.
Would you agree the boys that first landed at LZ-Xray had, or not?
Would you categorize the troops that held against the "high-tide" offensive during infamsous Tet offensive as being upper or lower classed low-lifes? Maybe its just me, but nobody chooses to go through that kind of hell unless they're deranged.
I appreciate your sentiment, damning the middle class, as worthy of consideration; it would seem that, apparently, you sypathize with the author's sentiments though.
What's so special about 1980?
