Not since Sherman's March has the Republic been so sullied as when the pig pelosie took the gavel to open the current House session. Sherman encourage the troops to openly rape women and children and burn everything to the ground on his March to the sea.She should burn in hell everafterward.

“Sherman encourage the troops to openly rape women and children and burn everything to the ground on his March to the sea.”

He did not do any of that.

GENERAL SHERMAN’S ATROCITIES AND WAR CRIMES In Part 13 we will briefly examine a few of the atrocities and war crimes that General Sherman committed against the people of Georgia. Some today argue that Sherman was a war criminal. He was, of course, never prosecuted for his crimes - victors rarely are. In 1863 Lincoln had signed what is called the Lieber Code - the laws of war for the United States armies in the field.

General Sherman was a war criminal, but that was not because of General Grant’s orders. During this first phase of his campaign, Sherman focused on Atlanta because the city of Atlanta was not only a “vital business center, rail hub, and symbol of the South” but also one of the larger urban areas in the South. I know the pro-Union mayor of Atlanta, when asking Sherman about not burning the city, asked for a delay or mercy because of pregnant women who couldn’t flee, and Sherman didn’t care.

That’s a far cry from rape though.

I ageee that whay Sherman (and that union general inthe shenandiah valley) did would be considered war crimes today. For all that matter US Grants indiscimnate shelling of Vicksburg would be called a war crime.

And yes, there was likely rape. It’s all too common among conquering armies.

BUT none of that ia evidemce that Sherman so ordered.

And btw, Lew Rockwell????

Please foegive typos am on th3 treadmill using a teeny tiny keypad.

BFD: Gen Curtis Lemay admitted his firebombing of Tokyo & other Japanese cities & civilian areas was most certainly a crime. He personally ordered the killing of hundreds of thousands of the civilian enemy.

The difference between war criminal & hero is winning the war!

And those scum like Quantrell and Bloody Bill Anderson are heros in your book I bet. Sherman is considered the first modern general. He believed in total war. A hard War is what he called it. But I have never heard anything about him ordering the rape of women and Children. Sherman was very much sympathetic with the South. T

What treaty was broken in 1865?

I believe that war is war.

All is on the table in total war.

Julius Cesar had no qualms eliminating entire cities, murdering women & children, raping pillaging & enslaving. The tactics of Rome brought about the 200 year Pax Romana.

If we had allowed Patton to destroy the Red Army after WWII & allowed Douglas MacArthur to invade & destroy the Chinese Communists in the 1950’s we would likely have saved untold hundreds of millions of Chinese & Russian lives in the long run. We would also have a truly free Russia & a China that would be Taiwan instead of the Bully of Asia. We indiscriminately murdered hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians during the war. Now they are among the freest & most prosperous nations on Earth & a valued ally.

Sherman's tactics saved lives. Union lives as well as Confederate lives. The atom bomb saved lives. Both American & Japanese. The fact that we were willing to do whatever necessary to destroy the enemy & their will to resist was essential to end the killing. War crimes? Only if you are the victim. Our enemies would show us no kindness.

The original claim was that Sherman committed war crimes. Others disputed this. Your argument that war crimes were somehow justified concedes the point.

Making War on Civilians is a Hanging Offense in the US Army. Sherman should have been hung for it. And, all of you guys could be arguing whether his hanging was justified.

And, who was the first group of Confederate Civilians that Sherman and Grant went after by law?

The Jews. (See General Order #11)
