After I turned/was turned back toward the Lord, rock music gradually became less and less tolerable to me. I have CDs bought before that--Rolling Stones, Cream, Credence, etc.--that are now covered with dust.

My daughter dragged me to a "music" store where they were loudly playing awful music, and I thought I was going to suffocate. I fled into the classical room and something was playing that stopped me in my tracks. I literally spread my arms wide and tried to breathe it in. The old Japanese guy in there looked at me like I was nuts.

It was like a toothache had suddenly been replaced by peace and joy. Now that, I thought, is what music is supposed to *feel* like. That was the first time I heard of Charlotte Church, and the first time I heard her sing "Pie Jesu."

I believe that she is a gift from God, just to give us joy. And just as in her "Panis Angelicus" one hears the authentic voice of God, so in "Sympathy for the Devil" one hears the authentic voice of Satan.

Music does affect the soul, the spirit if you will. And not all music affects it in the same way. I agree with the author that some music leads us toward God, while other music leads us away, independently of the lyrics.
