A pro-life group next week will announce a new advertising campaign that features what it calls "The Deadly Dozen" - 12 U.S. senators who are both Catholic and support legalized abortion.

The campaign, part of the American Life League's Crusade to Defend Our Catholic Church, includes Sens. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and John Kerry, D-Mass., a Democratic candidate for president. In a statement, the organization said the dozen senators are "claiming to be faithful Catholics."

Subsequent phases of the ad campaign will include identifying other "Deadly Dozens" from the ranks of U.S. House members and governors.

"For 2,000 years, the Catholic Church has steadfastly defended the sanctity of all human life," said American Life League president Judie Brown. "The simple fact is you cannot actively support abortion and be a faithful Catholic. You can't have it both ways. The Church's teachings on this matter are very clear."

The group's announcement comes on the heels of the Vatican's release Thursday of a new set of guidelines approved by Pope John Paul II for Catholic politicians. The document says that church opposition to abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage was not up for negotiation. It urges lawmakers, when voting on legislation, to stay in line with the church's "nonnegotiable ethical principles."

The Associated Press reports that Kerry has rejected the Vatican's new guidelines.

He told AP that "as a Catholic" he has "enormous respect for the words and teachings of the Vatican." But Kerry says that to "represent all the people" he can't be bound by church doctrine.

The six declared Democratic candidates for president will appear together for the first time at a dinner Tuesday night celebrating the 30th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. The actual anniversary is Wednesday.

Said Brown, "This crusade and the ad campaign are designed to identify those public officials who are flagrantly ignoring this truth, to bring this to the attention of both their bishops and the public at large, and demand that these public officials either recant their openly pro-abortion stance or cease claiming to be Catholic."

The announcement of the entire "Deadly Dozen" will be made in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.

Judie Brown and ALL have been at the forefront confronting these issues since their inception which is why the American Life League is a major beneficiary of my meager resources. Thanks for posting this. I pray every Freeper will find out about this group and support it. They do great, gritty work.

He is not representing all of the people anyway. He represents those voters who share his own narrow view of what is life. He certainly isn't representing those most vulnerable in his State; the unborn!

What a typical politician he is, deserving "enormous" respect for himself! ;-)
