A question to experienced freepers...

Posted on 11/15/2002 4:10:17 PM PST by Bushmaniac

Hi. I was just wondering about something. I am from rural Oregon and most of the people I know here don't really tolerate questions, so, I figure this is a good place to ask. (I'm 17)

I am obviously against abortion, b/c why should a woman have the right to choose whether or not she can have a child. That's stupid, women should be seldom seen and never heard... that's what my dad says anyway.

But I am confused. It looks like to me that most Christians here (my home town) are for the death penalty, aka capital punishment. It doesn't seem right to me that humans don't have the right to take life, only God, when it comes to abortion. But when it comes to capital punishment, the state should have the right to kill without God's permission!? I don't understand, could somebody please help me out here?

Thanks in advance!

The difference is that the killed baby has not committed the crime of taking someone else's life.

But who decides that a crime, even murder, should be followed with another one? Isn't the pope against capital punishment?

BM, I base my opinion on the bible and not on human logic. There might be some who argue against capital punishment from the bible, but they have an unprovable argument. I believe the bible argument FOR capital punishment is MUCH stronger than the bible argument AGAINST capital punishment.

Are you a bible scholar? Do you consider every word to be God's Word?

Hmmmmmmmmmm... no, I am not a bible scholar, but I do think the NT is much more important in terms of understanding God's intentions than the OT. And if you make a case for Capital Punishment, you could then make a case for slavery, subjugation of women and the like. Should those things be ok too?

Those things were all changed in the New Testament. The power of civil government to use life/death to maintain civil order was not changed. (Romans 13)

Hey, fun is fun, but, so sorry. I think I hear your mother calling. Here's your hat and coat. Bye bye. Y'all come back and see us again sometime real soon.

She should thank God daily that her mother doesn't believe the same as she does about birth control.

Woulda been hard to post if her mother had, wouldn't it? LOL.

But who knows (serious note) -- Maybe her mother did and her disruptive behavior is a result of someone who knows they're just "lucky" and not just "loved." (Sorry to get philosophical on you.)

Yeah, well, no telling what makes a liberal tick. They're all victims of something.
