I would say one of the biggest faults in public schools is the tendency not to teach the students to "look it up".

They are taught to parrot back what is in the book. It is assumed that the book is the fount of all wisdom and will never be challenged or changed.

In religious schools the teachers know what they teach is going to be challenged and so they teach point and counterpoint and make sure the students know how to look things up.

that takes curiosity and not conformity.

something in short abundance in our top down education system.

the dept of education needed to go 20yrs ago.

it is creating far more harm than is even obviously apparent on the surface.

public school teachers don’t make their students look things up because 9 times out of ten they’re wrong.
