Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The Scriptures In Handel’s Messiah

Psalm 24:7-10

7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.

(King James Version)

One of my cherished memories of Jerusalem was my self-guided solo walk along the ramparts. I had wanted to walk the entire perimeter, but, like the road around Kauai, the path abruptly ends at one point, and you have to turn around and go back the way you came. On Kauai, this is due to Sea Cliffs. In Jerusalem, it is because of The Temple Mount, parts of which are restricted against non-muslims. Imagine my delight at finding this VIDEO. (The tour is in "Real Time" so give yourself an hour and a half.)

The most interesting features of the Walls of Jerusalem are the Gates. Climbing up gives you a commanding view of the City and beyond. There are interesting Historical Markers along the way.

One Gate, however, is not accessible. That is the Eastern Gate, through which The Messiah is expected to enter the City. It is most probably the Gate through which Jesus made His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, since it is directly across from The Mount of Olives. Suleiman the Magnificent believed that the Jewish Messiah would be entering Jerusalem by this gate, so he had it sealed up in 1540-1541AD. Then, the area right in front of the gate was made into a Muslim cemetery, to prevent the Messiah from attempting to pass through. The blocked gates are there to this day, and so are the graves.

Psalm 24 is the Text for today's Chorus.

Psalm 24 is especially beautiful, and can have a number of different meanings. Here are a few:

1. The Entry of the Ark of the Covenant: During King David's reign, he longed to build a Temple on the area he had purchased from Aruna the Jebusite. It had been a Threshing Floor, so it was on a nice flat area on top of a Mountain. The Ark, which had been housed in various places since the Exodus, had been moved around, captured by enemies, recovered, and guarded for years in various places. David wanted it to have a permanent home. As David brought the Ark into Jerusalem through the Gate, he danced with Joy, praising God. It is theorized by some scholars that Psalm 24 is the Song David wrote for this Special Occasion.

2. The Triumphant Entry: In Matthew 21:10, Jesus is described as entering Jerusalem (presumably through the Eastern Gate), riding on a donkey. This is in direct fulfillment of Zechariah 9, which describes a King, riding on a donkey, entering Jerusalem. Some scholars speculate that Psalm 24 just happened to be the Liturgical Reading in the Temple that day, but, who knows?

3. The Ascension into Heaven: This is the context in which Charles Jennens placed Psalm 24. He envisions the Gates of Heaven opening up to receive the Risen, Glorified Jesus (Acts 1:9-10)

4. The Gates to the Soul: OK...this is my own interpretation, so you can take it with a truck full of road salt. Our eyes, ears, and other senses are the gateways to our soul. Jesus calls them "Windows" (Matthew 6), and He also refers to Himself knocking on the door of our hearts (Rev. 3:20). Some of us, though, block up that door like Suleiman the Magnificent, and some even plant corpses (distrust, resentment, unforgiveness, the occult, anger, revenge, etc) in front of it to keep Him from passing through the Gate. Some keep their eyes (and heart) focused downward onto worthless things, that keep us from Joy and Inner peace. The Psalmist tells us to "Lift Up" those gates, gaze upward, listen intently, and be eager to receive from God what He has for you.

Lift up your heads...so that The King of Glory may enter.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 2

1 Why do the nations conspire,
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and his anointed, saying,
3 ‘Let us burst their bonds asunder,
and cast their cords from us.’

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord has them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 ‘I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill.’

7 I will tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to me, ‘You are my son;
today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron,
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.’

10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
with trembling 12kiss his feet,*
or he will be angry, and you will perish in the way;
for his wrath is quickly kindled.

Happy are all who take refuge in him.
