An Angel Appears at Fatima — Part 1

Welcome, and thank you for joining me for America Needs Fatima’s series “Stories of the Angels.” In this series we will be exploring the incredible angelic encounters found within scriptures, transcripts, stories of the saints and more, in an effort to understand their God-given mission. Come with me as I share the messages, prayers, and warnings these angels have brought to us and discover the many complexities that make them the most fascinating creatures to ever exist! Join us in this exploration of the mysteries surrounding God’s most faithful ministers, the admirable creatures we call the ANGELS.

We’ll begin this series with the three angelic apparitions in Fatima, starting with the Angel of Peace. Let’s set the scene. The year was 1916 and the world had descended into what seemed like an endless cycle of chaos. Battle after battle raged on with no apparent end in sight, and with the scent of death and despair thick in the air, the thought of peace was far from the minds and hearts of the people, and the point of no return was fast approaching.

It is in this dreadfully dark reality that we are introduced to three shepherd children who live near Fatima, Portugal: Lucia, (Lu see uh) Jacinta, and Francisco, who would be tasked with the great responsibility of sharing a message brought to them by the Mother of God herself. But before the children were visited by Our Lady, they had to be prepared and equipped to understand the reality of the wonders about to happen. And this is where the Angel of Peace comes in.

The Angel first appeared either in the spring or summer of 1916 at Loca do Cabeço, a rocky outcrop near the top of a knoll called Cabeço. As his title suggests, he appeared to the three children with words of peace on his lips. We are able to recall the events of the apparition through the eyes of Lucia, as she recounted what happened in the year 1924. At that time, Lucia confided in a priest about the angel’s visits, but she was advised not to speak about them publicly, lest they confuse the importance of Our Lady’s words. It was only in her 1937 memoir that she revealed their story in full. She said,

“We had been playing for a while when a strong wind shook the trees. Since it was a calm day, we looked up to see what was happening. Then we began to see, well above the trees that covered the stretch of land to the east, a light whiter than snow in the shape of a transparent young man who was more brilliant than a crystal struck by the rays of the sun.

“As he approached, we began to see his features. He was a young man of great beauty about fourteen or fifteen years old. We were surprised and ecstatic. We did not utter a word.

“Once he drew near us, he said:

‘Fear not. I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me.

“Kneeling down, he bowed until his forehead touched the ground.

Led by a supernatural inspiration, we imitated him, and repeated the words we heard him say: ‘My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love Thee. I beg Thee forgiveness for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love Thee.’

“After he had repeated this twice, he rose and said: ‘Pray thus. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications.’ Then he disappeared.”

And just like that, the Angel left the children, as quickly as he had appeared, leaving them with much to contemplate. Lucia later wrote,

“The supernatural atmosphere that enveloped us was so intense that we were almost unaware of our own existence. For a long time, we remained in the same position repeating the same prayer. The presence of God was so intense and intimate that we dared not speak to each other. On the following day, we felt our spirits still enveloped in that atmosphere, which was slowly disappearing.

“None of us thought of talking about this apparition or of recommending secrecy, for the incident itself demanded it. It was so intimate that it was difficult to utter a word about it. This might well have been the apparition that impressed us the most, because it was the first one thus manifested.”

An Angel Appears at Fatima — Part 2

Welcome, and thank you for joining me for America Needs Fatima’s series “Stories of the Angels.” In this series we will be exploring the incredible angelic encounters found within scriptures, transcripts, stories of the saints and more, in an effort to understand their God-given mission. Come with me as I share the messages, prayers, and warnings these angels have brought to us and discover the many complexities that make them the most fascinating creatures to ever exist! Join us in this exploration of the mysteries surrounding God’s most faithful ministers, the admirable creatures we call the ANGELS.

A strong wind swept through the air in the summer of 1916 at the house of Lucia dos Santos’s parents, in the village of Aljustrel, near Fatima. Three children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—now known as the three shepherd children of Fatima, played next to a well.

Earlier that year, the children had felt a similar strong wind in the spring or summer and looked up to see what was happening. Before their very eyes was the shape of a transparent young man who was more brilliant than crystal and they saw he was a young man of great beauty as he approached. This “man,” they discovered, was the Angel of Portugal, or the Angel of Peace, who had appeared to them in human form.

Now, the Angel was appearing to them a second time.

“What are you doing?” he exclaimed, “Pray! Pray a great deal! The Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs concerning you. Offer prayers and sacrifices constantly to the Most High!”

I’m sure we have all had our reasons for being scolded and have experienced it from our parents more often than not while growing up. But I don’t think I could ever fully recover from an angel scolding me. It is undoubtedly a scolding I would receive very seriously and take special care to heed.

But the scene we stumble upon here, with the children playing near the well, is a perfect example of why three children were tasked with the incredible responsibility of the Fatima apparitions. Although they had witnessed an angelic apparition that would shake anyone to their core, they would still remain childlike because they were innocent.

Children enjoy an innocent and carefree disposition that would be worth its weight in gold in those coming years as opposed to a bitter or war-hardened heart of an experienced adult. And as weighty as their future would become, their faith and their innocent hearts would see them to the end in that vital task.

But as we will soon learn, the three shepherds were perhaps a bit too carefree in the face of such a monumental event. This leads us to the three primary purposes for the Angel’s second apparition.

The first was to prepare the children for the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. Secondly, to act as the messenger of Our Lady. And lastly, to reprimand the children for not taking the situation as seriously as they ought.

And so, Lucia asked the Angel:

“How must we sacrifice?”

He told her, “Offer God a sacrifice of anything you can as an act of reparation for the sins with which He is offended and as a supplication for the conversion of sinners.

“Draw peace upon your country by doing this, I am its guardian angel—the Angel of Portugal. “Above all, accept and endure with submission whatever suffering the Lord sends you.”

Then, as mysterious as he arrived, he disappeared.

Lucia later said that “The angel’s words were impressed upon our souls like a light that made us understand Who God is, how much He loves us and wishes to be loved, the value of sacrifice and how sacrifice pleases God, and how He converts sinners because of it.”

And so, they were left once again to await the next apparition. This time, however, they had a task to complete and a message to share; a simple and straightforward message—pray, and make sacrifices for their sins and the sins of others.

Thank you for joining me; I hope you enjoyed today’s episode and return for the next one when the Angel brings the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to the children during the last angelic apparition of Fatima. I leave you with this parting prayer taught by the Angel to the Fatima children and encourage you to repeat and share it as often as possible. “My God, I believe, adore, hope, and love Thee. I beg Thee forgiveness for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love Thee.”

An Angel Appears at Fatima — Part 3

Welcome, and thank you for joining me for America Needs Fatima’s series “Stories of the Angels.” In this series we will be exploring the incredible angelic encounters found within scriptures, transcripts, stories of the saints and more, in an effort to understand their God-given mission. Come with me as I share the messages, prayers, and warnings these angels have brought to us and discover the many complexities that make them the most fascinating creatures to ever exist! Join us in this exploration of the mysteries surrounding God’s most faithful ministers, the admirable creatures we call the ANGELS.

Today we will dive into the third apparition of the Angel of Portugal, also called the Angel of Peace. In the first and second apparitions, the three children of Fatima were visited by an angel whom they described as “a light whiter than snow in the shape of a transparent young man who was more brilliant than a crystal struck by the rays of the sun.” They also stated that he had appeared to them as a child much like them, looking to be only fourteen years old. This detail is essential for us to dwell on for a moment as it leads us to conclude that this Angel of Peace was not trying to scare the children. Rather, he assumed the form of a child similar to them to remove any additional element of fear that would not serve his purpose.

His intention was to encourage the three shepherd children to do penance for their sins and the sins of humanity as the world around them continued to descend into chaos. Another reason the angel appeared to these children was to give them the tools and prayers necessary to properly execute the mission Our Lady was about to give them. A message of prayer, penance, and peace was one with the potential to lead humanity from the depths of despair, and it was drawing closer and closer every day.

Unlike the first two apparitions, this one included prayers, words of wisdom from the Angel, and the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the form of a chalice and Host.

The third apparition occurred either at the end of the summer or the beginning of the fall of 1916, once again at Loca do Cabeço. And we are granted the pleasure of knowing this apparition through the testimony of Sister Lucia dos Santos, who said:

“As soon as we arrived there, we began to say the Angel’s prayer on our knees, with our faces to the ground.

‘My God, I believe, adore, hope, and love Thee....’ I do not know how often we said this prayer when we saw an unknown light shining over our heads.

We rose to see what was happening and saw the angel bearing a chalice in his left hand. Drops of blood fell into the chalice from a Host suspended over it.

Leaving the chalice and the Host suspended in the air, the angel prostrated himself beside us and said the following prayer three times:

‘Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, I adore Thee profoundly and offer Thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the earth, in reparation for the insults, sacrileges, and indifference with which He is offended. And through the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg Thee for the conversion of poor sinners.’

He rose up after this and took the chalice and the Host in his hand; he gave the Host to me and the contents of the chalice to Jacinta and Francisco to drink, saying: ‘Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, who is horribly insulted by ungrateful men. Make reparation for their crimes and console your God.’

He again prostrated himself on the ground and repeated the same prayer three more times with us. ‘Most Holy Trinity....’ Then he disappeared.”

After this vision, the children remained prostrated and repeated the angel’s prayer for a long time.

The apparitions of the angel had an “annihilating” effect on the children because he communicated something supernatural that fatigued them.

Lucia said, “It seemed to deprive us even of the use of our bodily senses for a long time.” At the same time, they felt great peace and happiness, as if their souls were immersed in God.
