Land disputes are endemic and frequently very violent in Morelos. In part this is due to the very conflicted land ownership records. In the 19th century there was a determined campaign at state level to alienate communal land tights and allow individuals with cash resources to buy large parcels to expand the sugar cane cultivation hacienda system. The Revolution of 1910-15 began the process of breaking up some latifundia. This involved both return of landed property to some communes and small parcels given to cultivator families. The legal toll was absolute land tenure document chaos. Battling between families over property lines is common and real violence common.
