Well he’s wrong. NATO should have been disbanded after the fall of the Soviet Union.
“NATO should have been disbanded after the fall of the Soviet Union.”
BINGO BINGO BINGO
1000% correct
and the Wikipedia NATO page history section says exactly why it should have been disbanded when it was no longer needed:
“In the 1990s, the organization extended its activities into political and humanitarian situations that had not formerly been NATO concerns.”
Oh, what a great idea! Let's get rid of NATO so there's nobody to stand against Russia when it begins to reconstitute its old empire.
I mean, don't Russians have the absolute, God given, right to rule over their neighbors, regardless of what their neighbors think of that?
Nobody should stand in the way of Russians, not now, not ever, right?
</sarcasm>
This type of thinking doesn’t make any sense. The Soviet Union was a huge threat to the civilized world. Before the Soviet Union came into existence, the Russian Empire was a despotic imperialist state that oppressed many Eastern Europen nations. In other words, there has been no tradition of friendly Russia.
Suddenly, just because the Russians claimed they weren’t bad guys anymore, you are saying that we should have given them a huge benefit of the doubt. This would have been extremely unwise. We should have given Russia 20 years to prove it has become a civilized and de-communized country.
I am asking again: Why such a huge benefit of the doubt for Russia? They didn’t even try to de-communize. The Lenin Mausoleum is sill in the Red Square. There are thousands of Lenin statues in public places in Russia. In my country and in other former Communist countries we removed the statues of our Commie criminals. The Russians still worship them.
NATO served to blunt the expansion of the Soviet Union and today serves to protect Western Europe. I.e., alliances are as old as nations and tribes. If I lived in any Western European nation I would sleep better under a NATO alliance. The Ukraine Russia war may have been averted with a Ukraine in NATO.
