Statement of Cardinal Joseph Tobin on the United States Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Matter
Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey (RCAN) ^ | June 24, 2022 | Cardinal Archbishop Joseph Tobin

Posted on 06/24/2022 11:07:34 AM PDT by one guy in new jersey

The United States Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to overturn the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide recognizes that even the most helpless and dependent human beings have a right to life and possess inherent dignity and worth.

The Catholic Church teaches that all human life is sacred, from conception to natural death. We must oppose the many threats to human life and dignity evident in contemporary society, including abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and capital punishment.

Abortion represents a failure to recognize the sanctity of human life and promotes a culture in which human life in its most vulnerable moment is perceived as disposable. It is telling that in the public debate, the unborn child frequently disappears from the moral calculus.

Furthermore, abortion is not healthcare. It is a disastrous attempt to create a false equivalency between the taking of innocent human life and the “reproductive health” of women in our society. It results in inhuman and lethal consequences.

We join with Pope Francis in noting that “it is troubling to see how simple and convenient it has become for some to deny the existence of a human life as a solution to problems that can and must be solved for both the mother and her unborn child” (Pope Francis, address to the United Nations, Sept. 25, 2020). Our Holy Father has repeatedly said that abortion is not a religious issue; it’s a human rights issue.

We recognize that a woman’s decision to have an abortion is often tragic and painful. A woman who takes this desperate action is often under great duress and is encouraged by social structures that are patently sinful. As people who care deeply for all women struggling with unplanned or unwanted pregnancies, we must ensure that life-giving options are available and our support does not end simply with the birth of a child.

We recognize that a significant number of our fellow citizens are angered by this decision of our nation’s highest Court. We hope that all Americans can discuss respectfully how best to support women who face crucial decisions while recognizing the dignity of the most vulnerable among us.

We agree with the analysis of Pope Francis, who has made it clear that if we fail to protect life, no other rights matter.

A well-written, orthodox statement from Cardinal Tobin.

Not sure quite how to take his statement about recognizing those who are "angered" by the SCOTUS decision in Dobbs, but that's about the only thing that caused a bit of a raised eyebrow on the ooccasion of a first read.

It helps that this issue is one on which the self-declared Bishop of Rome is both sound, and regularly vocal (verging on...wait for it...rigid!).

While I am overjoyed at the Dobbs decision, and have indeed waited for this day since I was a teenager, I have to remember that the ultimate goal has to be recognition of the right to life from conception to natural death. The decision returns decisions about abortion to the states, and we will have prolife and pro-death states, analogous to free and slave states. I hope we don’t have to go through another hot civil war to settle the issue.

Getting there.

The USCCB and the Vatican have both gone luve.

Cardinal Tobin does stray into the so-called “Seamless Garment” territory, invoking the quite arguably separate issues of, for example, the death penalty, and euthanasia.

The Seamless Garment blather is and always was an effort to take the heat off of rampant abortion enthusiasts.

A well-written, orthodox statement from Cardinal Tobin.

Which means someone else wrote it for him.

If they are smart it was written weeks ago, with a quick look through this AM after the decision was announced and the majority opinion released.

Surprisingly rational. But of course he is just reflecting the position of the USCCB, and I don’t think he’d dare to go against that, no matter his personal opinions.

I strongly disagree!

Bergoglio has praised the Italian abortionist, Emma Bonina, has one of Italy's forgetten greats. She has murdered over 1,000 babies and invented a modified bicycle pump to aid in those murders.

Bergoglio has an open door policy for pro-aborts like Jeffery Sachs, Bill Gates, Joe Biden; yet he implied a presidential candidate (Donald Trump) who builds walls is not a Christian

I wonder if the two groups are similar.

I take it that in this instance, you are offering the idea that, you can judge a man by the company he keeps.

I do admit that a man can drain what he says of all meaning and significance if his real-world actions do not match his hifalutin’ words.

Perhaps this is true in Bergoglio’s case. I was focusing on his words but the actions you mention do bespeak, if not a total lack of purpose, then at least some seriously conflicting priorities.

His devotion to the priorities of deep staters, globalists, and cheerleaders for mass sterilization and depopulation is well known, and a huge problem.

Very good point.

Bergoglio has granted audiences to homo couples, transgenders, abortionists, communist dictators, etc. Yet, after 5+ years, he has not granted one audience to the dubia (amoris laetitiae) cardinals.

It's much more than that:

Pope Francis: Church too focused on gays and abortion

Thanks for pointing that out.

I do remember that from almost nine years ago.

Here’s a quote from the story:

___________

“The church’s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently,” Francis said.

“We have to find a new balance; otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel.”

Instead, he said, the Catholic Church must work to heal the wounds of its faithful and seek out those who have been excluded or have fallen away.

“It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars,” he said. “You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else.”

He said the Church had become tied up in “small-minded rules” and risked losing its true purpose.

“The most important thing is the first proclamation: Jesus Christ has saved you. And the ministers of the Church must be ministers of mercy above all.”

His remarks could generate dismay among clergy in the United States who have already expressed disappointment that Francis has not pressed Church teaching on abortion, contraception and homosexuality.

Last week, Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, wrote in his diocesan newspaper that he was “disappointed” Francis hadn’t addressed abortion since his papacy began six months ago, according to AP.

‘Home of all’

But Francis said: “We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible,” he said.

“The teaching of the Church, for that matter, is clear and I am a son of the Church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time.”

Francis created headlines two months ago when he spoke about gay priests during an impromptu news conference on a return flight from Brazil. He said it was not up to him to judge about the sexual orientation of clergy as long as they were searching for God and had goodwill.

In his latest interview, Francis said his remarks were in line with Catholic teaching.

“This Church with which we should be thinking is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people. We must not reduce the bosom of the universal Church to a nest protecting our mediocrity,” he said.

I admit, you have a strong point here.

A lot will depend on whether Bergoglio comes forward with a timely statement on Dibbs, and if he does, obviously, what he says.

I’d like to think he has a strong statement in him at this point in time, but we will see.

Bergoglio issued public congratulations to Baby-Killer Joe Biden before the POTUS election was even decided in 2020.

It’s now 11:48 PM in Rome, and not a peep from the Creep regarding the SCOTUS decision.

Bergoglio apparently has more important priorities than casting a smiling gaze upon faithful U.S. American Catholics who have had a very good day, for a change.
