To be in official DC surely must be one of the most profound unreality bubbles of them all.
I do not know if you ever saw it, or having seen it remember it; but, after 9/11 someone did a man on the street interviews with people about that day in the Capitol and they just happened to pick a fellow from K Street.
The man spoke with conviction about how strange it was in the aftermath of the attack, with everyone milling about in the streets because of the offices closing.
But it was the way he described those offices, the lobbying and law firms, that really stuck out.
He said that they were the great industries of any major city, and he repeated it twice ... that lobbying and law firms were the great industries of major cities.
That’s what he thinks great cities do! What a benighted worldview his bubble has.
Law and lobbying firms as a rule of thumb do not produce anything, they make no goods and the services that they provide, insomuch as they seem needful mainly to try to cope with other lawyers and other lobbyiest, cannot even claim to be revenue neutral but they are nothing but an expense, a drain on the productive, and like the legendary world-serpent with its tail in its mouth they feed on the need for each other because they have so twisted and distorted the law and government that they create full employment for their unproductive and counterproductive professions.
And yet that is DC.
