Moscow, October 7, Interfax - The participation of the guard of honor in the wedding ceremony in St. Petersburg of the heir to the head of the Russian Imperial House, George Romanov, and Italian citizen Victoria Bettarini, was agreed through official channels and did not violate any laws, Director of the Chancellery of the House of Romanov Alexander Zakatov told Interfax.
"Preparations for the wedding, all official correspondence lasted for several months. The commander of the Western Military District issued a relevant instruction regarding the participation of the guard of honor. The presence of the guard of honor did not violate any laws, rules, regulations, or traditions. Everything was coordinated properly, and no one can indicate a specific rule of law that was not observed," Zakatov said.
Earlier on Wednesday, it emerged that the Defense Ministry's leadership brought to disciplinary responsibility servicemen of the Western Military District, who sent the commandant's unit to the wedding ceremony at St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.
Zakatov noted that the head of the House of Romanov, Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna and her son, Grand Duke George Mikhailovich, have been Russian citizens since 1992.
"They always show great respect for the state authorities of Russia and its Armed Forces, and for the current laws. And the guard of honor at the ceremony was beautiful. It showed the whole world that historical traditions are respected in Russia," Zakatov said.
He noted that at the wedding ceremony, among the guests were not only the heads and members of the House of Romanov and other non-reigning dynasties, but also representatives of the current monarchies of Belgium, Liechtenstein, Qatar, and Luxembourg and former heads of state, namely, Tsar of Bulgaria Simeon II and the last king of Egypt Fuad II.
"The presence of officials from foreign monarchies, firstly, became evidence of recognition of Russia's role as a stronghold of traditional values, and secondly, it is a weighty reason for sending the guard of honor to the festivity," Zakatov said.
Romanov married Bettarini at St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg last Friday.
The ceremony was attended by the media, including from European countries, and St. Isaac's Cathedral, which has the status of a museum, was temporarily closed to visitors.
According to a press release, about a thousand guests from many countries gathered at the wedding ceremony.
Romanov's wife and director of the Russian Imperial Foundation Bettarini converted to the Orthodox faith at St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral in St. Petersburg on July 12, 2020 and received the name Victoria Romanovna. Now, in accordance with the traditions of the House of Romanov, she has been awarded the title of Her Serene Princess, Zakatov said.
