When during His earthly ministry Christ once said some hard things and the result was some who had been following Him ceased to do so anymore He then turned to the twelve and asked if the6 would leave too.
“To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” was the reply.
These days the hard things people cannot bear to hear are stuff like have basic morality ... but instead of leaving as honest unbelievers they often try to appear that they have stayed and really seek to get everyone else to agree with them, to draw out others to follow them if they can.
Clinging to Christ is much more than crudely seeming to not walk away but also actually clinging to Him, His Gospel, and not to the teachings of men designed to work on proverbial itchy ears.
We have been promised that we will not face trials greater than we can endure.
