To be clear, I'm not a fan of Keynesian economics. I just think that our government has operated so poorly over the past few decades that it is difficult to pull out what effect was greatest: tax cuts, regulatory changes, deficit spending, ???

I used to be a knee-jerk supporter of tax cuts, but I would rather have balanced budgets. Yes, I've heard of the Laffer Curve, but it is a curve and there is a point at which further tax cuts don't translate into larger tax returns.

Except for a year or two during the Clinton administration the federal budget, and many state and local budgets, have run deficits.

When the economy booms are we reaping the benefits of low taxes and regulations, or the benefits of passing along the costs to future generations? I don't know that anyone can be certain. I just believe that regardless, it is immoral to pass on the costs to future generations unless those future generations will benefit, e.g. issuing bonds for building new dams, etc.

I voted for him twice and will never regret it no matter how many lies are thrown at me.

There is a central point Hayek and later Friedman would point out at length. One person, or any small group of people(relatively or not) CANNOT predict, plan, provide what the masses will want/need. It is NOT humanly possible. Attempts to do so have been led by arrogant tyrants and always lead to disaster.

I have read Hayek and Friedman and listened to many of Friedman's discussions and interactions with other economists.

Nothing I have said argues in favor of total government control of the economy. Nothing I have said argues for anything like "central planning".

What I would be arguing for is that since we're always going to have big government, and we are always going to have crony capitalists influencing government decisions via lobbyists, then some of that regulation should be in favor of workers and communities. There should be some limits on what multinational corporations can do, especially since they have less interest in what happens over the long term in the US than the citizens of this country.

There are a group on the right who call themselves neoreactionary. They have read up on Spengler and the like. They see what's coming. They admittedly don't have any really good ideas on what to do about it except keep their heads down or fight the good fight knowing it might be hopeless.

The "good news" is that it took Rome hundreds of years to finally fall, and then only in the West.

America might be to Europe what the Byzantine Empire was to Rome. We could be the second and final gasp for this last period of empire building.

But even if we're doomed it could be decades or centuries before the Islamic, Chinese, African, or Indian hordes take out NY and DC.

Little by little. Step by step ...
"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life.
If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."
~ Joseph Stalin?

-------------

"The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism.
But under the name of "liberalism" they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program,
until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."
--Norman Thomas, longtime U.S. Socialist Presidential candidate

Are we there, yet?
