The California Catholic Conference issued a brief statement last week decrying the toppling of Junipero Serra statues. But the statement did little to stiffen the spines of Catholic clerics. The statement sought to reason with the mob, noting that Junipero Serra devoted his life to the service of Indians and protected them from Spanish soldiers.
At the bottom of this wobbliness is the loss of conviction about the Churchs mission. Church officials simply dont believe in it anymore.
The historical truth is that Serra repeatedly pressed the Spanish authorities for better treatment of the Native American communities. Serra was not simply a man of his times. In working with Native Americans, he was a man ahead of his times who made great sacrifices to defend and serve the indigenous population and work against an oppression that extends far beyond the mission era, said the statement. And if that is not enough to legitimate a public statue in the state that he did so much to create, then virtually every historical figure from our nations past will have to be removed for their failings measured in the light of todays standards.
This is true, but the mob doesnt care.

As Junipero Serra statues bit the dust in Los Angeles and San Francisco, members of the laity have looked to the hierarchy for leadership beyond just defensive statements about Serra. But no such leadership is forthcoming. One bishop, Robert Barron of Los Angeles, has even argued that this controversy is not primarily the hierarchys business:

Sorry but agnostic homosexuals dominate the hierarchy and they are at their core Marxists. Sad but true.
Serra “made” California; the mission settlements were the seeds of the cities that grew up along the coast.
The indigenous population was forced to give up their inter-tribal wars and take up farming. They received new types of crops and domesticated animals.
They also got Christianity to replace their pagan nature rituals.
If you want all that reversed, then OK, but I have to question your value system.

Good going padre.
St. Junipero Serra’s feast day is July 1.
“Junipero arrived at San Diego on July 1, 1769, and on July 14 he established Presidio-Mission San Diego de Alcala, California’s first Christian settlement.”
Quote from the Novena of St. Junipero Serra.
Heres 'a real Catholic shepherd, Murph, unlike your hero coward of the county, Barron:
Catholic Priest Father Schumacher Among Defenders of St Louis Statue
Fr. Schumacher, whose priestly ordination was in May 2019, addressed a shouting mob, attempting to inform them about St. Louis life, saying, St. Louis was a man who willed to use his kingship to do good for his people.
It's a shame you don't seem to see the difference.
On many Saturdays, I've joined my fellow parishioners to pray the rosary outside abortion clinics, Murph. We have never seen our bishop there.
What have you done, Murph, besides complainomg on the internet at those who criticize your coward of the county?
