Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Isaiah (The Servant Songs) Chapter 51

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

17 Awake, awake!
    Rise up, Jerusalem,
you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord
    the cup of his wrath,
you who have drained to its dregs
the goblet that makes people stagger.
18 Among all the children she bore
    there was none to guide her;
among all the children she reared
there was none to take her by the hand.
19 These double calamities have come upon you—
    who can comfort you?—
ruin and destruction, famine and sword—
    who can[a] console you?
20 Your children have fainted;
they lie at every street corner,
like antelope caught in a net.
They are filled with the wrath of the Lord,
with the rebuke of your God.

21 Therefore hear this, you afflicted one,
made drunk, but not with wine.
22 This is what your Sovereign Lord says,
your God, who defends his people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
    the cup that made you stagger;
from that cup, the goblet of my wrath,
    you will never drink again.
23 I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,
    who said to you,
‘Fall prostrate that we may walk on you.’
And you made your back like the ground,
like a street to be walked on.”

The Servant Songs enter darker territory with these verses.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name over all the earth!
How Wonderful, How Holy and How Perfect!
You Are So Magnificent in Your Glory,
And So Overwhelming in Your Righteousness and Justice!
And yet, Your mercies Are New Every Morning,
And As Each Day Dawns,
Your Love and Compassion is Just as Overwhelming to my soul.

Abba Father, We Thank You For This Awesome Message to Your Prophet Isaiah.
How difficult it must have been for him to carry the burden of Prophecy for Your People,
During a time of Captivity and Coming Redemption,
Political Upheaval and Shifting Empires,
At a Time when it seemed all hope was lost!
And yet…as we continue reading, we find Faith, Hope, and Love.

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

All of us have heard this expression:

"Well, I have some good news for you,
And some bad news.

Usually it is the "set-up" in an anecdote or a funny story, and is a mainstay of stand-up comedy (the old-fashioned kind of stand-up comedy, before it got political and filthy). In such a format either the good news or bad news can come first, depending on the punch line. And sometimes...well...it's no joke. But then again, humor is nearly always rooted in some kind of tragedy.

Stand-up comedy, as we know it today, has its origins in European Jewish Culture. A Storyteller was a fixture at Jewish Weddings and Celebrations, and was as important as the band. When Jewish people in America saw that country clubs and resorts were closed to them in the last century, they created their own places in the Catskill Mountains, driving distance from New York City. Here, stand-up flourished and became part of the American Entertainment Culture. Most of the Classic Comics who became famous in the early days of TV got their start in these resorts. Here is a partial list from Wikipedia:

Woody Allen
Morey Amsterdam
Milton Berle
Mel Brooks
Lenny Bruce
George Burns
Red Buttons
Sid Caesar
Myron Cohen
Bill Dana
Rodney Dangerfield
Phyllis Diller
Totie Fields
Buddy Hackett
Danny Kaye
Jerry Lewis
Jackie Mason
Carl Reiner
Don Rickles
Joan Rivers
Allan Sherman
Jonathan Winters
Henny Youngman

Even if this p[articular form of entertainment is not "your cup of tea" you can see how much this kind of "storytelling" has become completely entrenched in our language and culture.

Like a true Jewish Storyteller or Songwriter, Isaiah sets up the Bad News/Good News dichotomy is his prophecies, especially here in the Servant Songs.

Although the actual Servant Song doesn't pick up again until later in this Chapter (Isaiah 52), it is important to understand the NEED for such a Servant. Why is a Redeemer, a Savior, a bearer of sin, or an Atonement even necessary? Well, Isaiah gives us the BAD News first, right in this chapter. He tells us to WAKE UP and recognize the complete fall of mankind in our disobedience to God. "Awake, Awake" is the refrain. Our rebellion is the Bad News. God's Wrath is REALLY Bad News. Like the schlemiel in the Bad News/Good News story, our situation goes from bad to worse.

Tomorrow, we will pick up the "Servant Song" with the GOOD NEWS, and even the Servant's Feet are BEAUTIFUL.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
