Interesting speculation but what happens if Benedict dies tomorrow?
Then de facto Francis is the Pope then? Or was he always the Pope from his election.
Did Pope Emeritus Benedict Intend see the distinction the way Mazza did? Because if he did not, and was believing all the time that the Office of Bishop of Rome and the Office of Papacy were coterminous, then it follows that he was in fact resigning the office of Pope as well.

The most interesting thing I've seen from Fr. Z in a long time. He mentions the words "Francis" and "antipope" in the same sentence in a not dismissive and not derisory manner. That's quite some progress. In previous years, I've seen posters threatened and rebuked for raising this very possibility on his blog.
The elephant in the room is now too big to ignore.
