[Catholic Caucus] Archbishop Gregory has indicated Masses open to the public, in ALL archdiocesan parishes, missions, and campus ministries will not be celebrated starting this Saturday, March 14th until further notice.

Archbishop Gregory has indicated Masses open to the public, in ALL archdiocesan parishes, missions, and campus ministries will not be celebrated starting this Saturday, March 14th until further notice.

“Archbishop Gregory has indicated Masses open to the public, in ALL archdiocesan parishes, missions, and campus ministries will not be celebrated starting this Saturday, March 14th until further notice. Weddings and funerals may proceed but attendance should be limited to immediate family.

“Archbishop Gregory has also issued a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass during this time to all parishioners of the Archdiocese of Washington.

“We will issue an Emergency Preparedness document with the latest guidance and information to you on Friday, March 13. It will include guidance on how to proceed in view of the impact of the current situation on parish and archdiocese day-to-day operations.

“We realize this is a significant disruption to our carrying out the mission of the Church. We hope these changes are for a very limited period of time. Let us remember to keep each other -- and all those impacted – close in prayer during these challenging moments.”

- from an official ADW communication sent to all priests on March 12, 2020.

If I may ask, where is this?

My wife’s cousin is self isolating, and only leaving for mass. She was not exposed, but is on chemo

That’s about the only Diocese in America that such an act can be made.

No Bishop is willing to turn off the collection plate that cancelling Masses would entail.

It would mean a mass closure of Parishes and schools which rely on week to week collections to get by in most diocese in the USA.

From our pastor today.

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information
(updated 3/12/2020)

As it does with every emergency, health or safety situation, the St. Lawrence Center responds according to the following principles.

As a ministry of the Archdiocese of Kansas City of Kansas and to the University of Kansas, we follow as closely as possible their decisions.

To find ways to continue to advance the mission of the Center in any and all circumstances.

To keep people safe and healthy so our overall mission may reach more people.

To use extraordinary circumstances as opportunities for education and communication. Official statements are through kucatholic.org

To respond with agility

Although the response to the threat posed by the spread of COVID-19 is trending toward suspension and cancellation of more activities, since the risk in Kansas of infection remains low for most people, the following is in effect. Be advised that policies can be expected to change quickly.

Holy Mass, Adoration and Confessions
Mass remains open to the public. The spring break Mass schedule will remain in effect through March 22nd. (Weekends 11am and 5pm on Sunday) Daily Mass at 12:10pm. Adoration and Confession will precede daily Mass by 1 hour.

The sacramental and sanctifying, and ultimately, salvific grace of the Mass is of incomparable value, greater than life itself. For this very reason, then, prudence and care surrounding the Blessed Sacrament ensures that this grace will be available to more as soon as it is safe to do so. In other words, more people will have access to the Eucharist eventually if everyone is careful today.

Although the obligation to attend Sunday Mass has not been abrogated, in these unprecedented and uncertain circumstances, anyone who feels unwell or unsafe has this obligation dispensed, and is not guilty of sin for missing Mass. If you are more vulnerable or sick, please do not expose yourself and others to unnecessary risk. The obligation to receive Holy Communion in person is once per year during the Easter season. Therefore one is not guilty of sin for not physically receiving Holy Communion. The Center will attempt to stream the 11am Sunday Mass on its KU Catholic Facebook page for those who choose not to attend Mass in person.

For those who choose to attend Mass in person, the following policies are in effect:

no holy water fonts

physical contact with others is to be avoided

all involved with distribution and reception of Holy Communion (Body of Christ only) must wash or sanitize their hands. Extraordinary reception of Holy Communion (receiving in the hand) is recommended vs. ordinary reception (on the tongue)

offertory baskets will be in back of Church, and offertory online through kucatholic.org/give is encouraged

a clean environment will be emphasized and maintained

Center Operations and Activities
Currently, the St. Lawrence Center is open, yet we are encouraging everyone to stay home. Spring Break hours will remain in effect until March 22nd. 10am-3pm weekdays. 10am-6pm Sundays.

Non-Mass activities are suspended for this next week to give the staff the ability to move as many activities online as possible. No one, staff or constituents included, is obligated to come to the Center or attend in-person meetings or activities through March 22nd. Those who feel unsafe or unwell should definitely stay home. All others are encouraged to stay home until further notice.

Despite this policy, the Center will continue to do everything to advance its mission. It is hoped that creative ways, mostly online using available platforms, will be engendered. Although harder, again, it is hoped that the Center’s mission will take steps forward, not backward, during this uncertain time. If you are scheduled for a meeting or activity at St. Lawrence through March 22nd, expect to hear about alternative plans, or feel free to contact the organizer.

Classes for credit and seminars through the Center’s Institute for Faith and Culture are suspended until March 23rd. After that, expect the courses to be taught online. You will hear directly from your instructor regarding details.

Updated official statements will be available through kucatholic.org.

Fr. Mitchel Zimmerman
Director

“The obligation to receive Holy Communion in person is once per year during the Easter season.”

Huh? Homebound people have to go once a year during Easter?

The obligation is met if someone from the parish visits the homebound person to administer the Sacrament.

No, of course not although I delivered the Eucharist to home bound people and people in hospitals for three years.
