Actually he wasn’t. There are multiple sources on the web that describe him finding the church.

It’s called forgiveness and redemption.

It’s kind of a good thing. Except some folks cannot believe that a black man cannot possibly turn their lives around.

What's your point? I think it's pretty clear that he realized he was on the wrong path and turned his life around with God's help. Don't you accept the idea that sinners can repent? How does that work in your own life?
