California Supreme Court Rules Catholic Group Must Pay for Abortions

Golden State deems abortion 'basic health care'

SAN FRANCISCO (ChurchMilitant.com) - The Supreme Court of California has shot down a lawsuit a Catholic missionary group of women brought to overturn a state mandate that requires their health insurance subsidize abortions.

In August, an appeals court informed the Missionary Guadalupanas of the Holy Spirit (MGHS) ― a group whose "specific apostolate in the Church consists mainly in the integral evangelization and catechesis of the poor — indigenous peoples, migrants, the marginalized and excluded ― that a woman's decision to abort her child is "medically necessary."

California determined that abortions are "basic health care" and "medically necessary" under former Democrat Gov. Jerry Brown and regulated in 2014 that all healthy insurance plans must provide for abortions without any exceptions based on religious or moral grounds.

MGHS fought this state regulation by arguing that the state never offered an opportunity for public comment, rendering the decision unlawful.

But internal emails between Planned Parenthood and the California Health and Human Services agency in February 2014, which were discovered in April, showed that the nation's largest abortion chain had pressured the agency to make churches and religious groups pay for elective abortions.

Now the Catholic church has to kill babies?

Times have changed.

In this case, I recommend they not render under Caesar.

I remember when abortion was legalized in 1973 we were told that no taxpayer money would ever go for abortions. Never ever believe gov promises.

This type of ruling wont stop with California.

How many times is this battle going to be fought? Didn’t the Supremes rule in Little Sisters of the Poor that they didn’t have to cover abortion? Or is this a case of the baby killers trying until they win?

Ignore the ruling.

The State will heap giant fines on them that will wipe them out financially.

This case actually really does deserve USSC attention. Then again, forcing States to marry two sodomites was also infringing on Religion.

Don’t ignore the ruling! Find out who the individual people are who forced this evil on the religious order and confront them directly:To their face. We don’t need to know “tthe court” or “the agency” we have an obligation and a right to know who the people are that are ripping our country to pieces. It’s time for names and faces.

Refuse to pay what? If a church or religious organization sponsors and insurance plan, that insurance company supplying the coverage MUST cover abortions and contraception. Unless the church group doesn’t want to cover insurance, they will be paying for it.

This is a case for making health sharing a big thing. Those groups can pick who and what to carry.

The Little Sisters and Hobby Lobby cases were directed at federal mandates to cover abortion-inducing drugs and contraceptives, which they won.

This is a state mandate, quite a different jurisdiction. Not saying it’s right, just that it’s a different arena.

Then California can provide all the services the religious groups impacted by this order now provide. Let’s see the state afford that.
