I definitely agree about FDR! :-)
I always wondered why Harding was declared to be “bad”, until I found out he wasn’t. He did have a bad Cabinet Secretary (Albert Fall at Interior) which resulted in Teapot Dome, but that had no effect on the economy and Harding didn’t personally benefit. It’s almost a given a President is likely to have rotten or corrupt Cabinet members.
Harding did have some moral faults, but otherwise his philosophy was to just get out of the way and let the people flourish and do their thing. Exactly the kind of President we need more than the opposite. As the Louis Prima song went, he enjoyed himself (because it was shorter than you think). Sadly, we lost him too soon (just 2+ years into office). It’s curious Coolidge is so much more well-received, but without Harding, there’d have been no Coolidge. He just kept on with Harding’s policies and his people.
As for FDR... too long to cover his faults.
