You could say this has already happened with Rome allowing this false teaching to continue.

I had a friend overseas in 1989-1990 whose Uncle was one of the 5 Italian Head Priests. This guy took my friend to “see” the Pope on two occasions in the 60s driving a 1930s Rolls Royce car used only for that trip annually. He told me he got to go into the basement of the Vatican and sit in the tiney room that housed the primary transcripts from Christianity, and that one section had rolls of documents that were not included into the Bible for various reasons, but mostly because they threw questions upon those included. He told me the Pope back then had a good sense of humor but was burdened by the world, by WWII and the loss of faith in Europe.
