In the northern Russian capital of St. Petersburg, two cross processions took place yesterday to commemorate the transfer of the relics of St. Alexander Nevsky, with over 150,000 people participating.

His Eminence Metropolitan Barsanuphius of St. Petersburg and Ladoga served the Divine Liturgy in Kazan Cathedral together with several other hierarchs, including His Eminence Bishop Siluan, the rector of St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

High ranking members of the Russian government, as well as foreign dignitaries, and the rector of Saint Petersburg State University attended the Liturgy.

After another Liturgy in the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the St. Alexander Nevsky Lavra, during which Serbian officials attended, the great cross procession took place along Nevsky Prospect with the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God at the front. This was all to celebrate the transfer of the relics of St. Alexander Nevsky to the city by Peter I on September 12, 1724, according to the website of the Metropolis of St. Petersburg.

Amazing , isn’t it? When people have been denied the word of God they hunger for it. And once they come to know the love and salvation of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ they never let it be taken from them.

Agree with the first part.

For the second part, you left out “..for the first number of generations..”

Kids today KNEW the love and salvation of Jesus at one point or another and turned away from it.

Life got too easy and believing and following any religious laws became too hard.

And parents stopped giving beatings.

Had to include that one :)

I was referring to the former East European communist countries. Guess I should have indicated that. It is very hearting to see how the Russians and others in the former Warsaw Pact embrace their ancient Christian culture so fiercely and proudly.

I was too...predicting the future.

Forgive me for being so negative and I do pray that for MANY generations they don’t forget the ravages of communism and pass it down.

Cuban Americans in Florida after only 3 generations are gravitating left because “grandma is old and outdated and her stories are probably lies”.

I guess that’s what the kids tell themselves.

But I see it even in the ethnic families around here that have been here 100 years or less.

Each generation falls further from religion, it seems.

The fall from patriotism is slower. Sometimes not at all.

Thank goodness for that.

And Valdimir Putin, that horrible ogre who personally hacked the DNC, allowed and encouraged it.

Beautiful! I wish we Catholics still did processions. Would go against the spirit of Vatican II — too triumphalist, don’t you know?
