Revelation 17:15-18 (Babylon the city that reigns over the kings of the earth)
King James Bible Online ^

Posted on 08/17/2019 7:42:38 PM PDT by Faith Presses On

15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving Your Son the Lamb for us and for all that You've revealed to us in Your Word, including Your warnings to us on sin and Your instruction on Your good and acceptable and perfect will for us. Help us to know You and Your Son and Your Holy Spirit better through our study of Your Word, and help us especially in studying this book of Revelation that You've given us. And strengthen Your Church, including all of Your missionaries, pastors and church leaders, and all those being persecuted for Your Son's name, including in North Korea, China, Africa and Muslim lands, and Christians here who have lost their jobs for not compromising on Your Word, and keep Chinese leaders from corrupting Your Word in Chinese-language Bibles and help believers in North Korea and China, including children, to know You and meet in the truth of Your Word. Help us also as we face living in this time and place which is more and more rejecting Your Son and in which evil is so often called good and good evil, lies are called true and the truth called lies, and false accusers abound, as Satan's temporary grip on this world is increasing, and in which coldness is growing in many churches and those with the spirit of the tare and the spirit of the hireling so often have the loudest voices. Help us also to take the beam out of our own eye before trying to remove the moat from the eyes of others and to follow Your direction on how we are to live each day, not depending on our own sight or own understanding or own strength but on You, help us to be the salt and light that we should be, and help, too, our leaders in the world, including the Trumps and Pences, and help our nation also so that many hearts here turn back to You and many more souls are saved. We also pray for those possessed or oppressed by demons, those oppressed by man, the falsely accused and falsely convicted, those who serve and protect others, the poor and the homeless, and those addicted to substances. And also help and protect children who are being abused and children in the womb and those fighting to protect them. In the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

Dr Jeremiah has a pretty good sermon on this and explains that Saddam Husein was attempting to actually rebuild Babylon- thinking he was the reincarnation of King Nebuchadnezzar 2n’d- and even had money minted with his likeness and the king’s, and bricks made with words honoring the king- He even tried buying the door that was used in some false godeesses temple- but the owners wouldn’t sell it

Jeremiah explains that when it comes time to rebuild, forces and resources are already in play to get it rebuilt very quickly, as world leaders will flock to it as an ‘investment’ thinking it will bring them great wealth- and for awhile it will- but in the end it will be their undoing-

“In 2009 the U.S. State Department issued a media note announcing a $700,000 pledge to The Future of Babylon Project, explaining that “Babylon stands out among Iraq’s rich contributions to humanity.””

Link below:

The place will be so wicked, so vile, that demons will roam around seen by humans, and sin will be rampant- and people will accept it as the price they have to pay for being in the world’s most opulent city—

“The rebuilding of Babylon is not just an idle topic of scholarly books. When Saddam Hussein rose to power in Iraq, he conceived a grandiose scheme for the rebuilding of that ancient city. He promised that Babylon’s grand palaces and legendary Hanging Gardens (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) would rise from the dust. Believing himself to be the reincarnation of King Nebuchadnezzar II, who had conquered Jerusalem 2,500 years earlier, Hussein invested more than $500 million toward his goal of restoring Babylon’s ancient city.

In 1987, while on a site visit to the ruins of Nebuchadnezzar’s palace, Hussein asked how his guides were so certain of the date of its construction. The curator showed Hussein some of the original bricks, stamped with the name of Nebuchadnezzar II and the date that we now refer to as 605 B.C. Hussein, not to be outdone, had bricks laid in his palace wall that read: “In the reign of the victorious Saddam Hussein, the president of the Republic, . . . the guardian of the great Iraq and the renovator of its renaissance and the builder of its great civilization, the rebuilding of the great city of Babylon was done in 1987.”1”

https://www.davidjeremiah.org/age-of-signs/babylon-today-rebuilding-the-ancient-city

It’s an itnerestign read- but his sermon had more info I believe-

It strikes me that the only city on earth that actually resembles “Babylon the great” is New York City (which ironically has a suburb Babylon on Long Island).

It “rules over the kings of the earth” in the sense that it is the headquarters of the United Nations, and also in certain other ways related to the left-wing globalist culture.

The ten horns who hated the whore of Babylon and scorched her with fire could be interpreted as the Islamic nations who participated in the 9-11 attacks and this also becomes a literal prophetic fulfilment in terms of smoke and ash falling on the ships doing commerce with many nations.

A woman with a cup holding fornications? That is not so difficult to decode either.

Despite NYC being the home of the President and stand-up guy Rudy Guiliani, it is essentially a socialist bastion and also the home of many abominables (you showed us the basket of deplorables, here’s the basket of abominables right back at ya).

So if I’m right, we are in the end times because these prophecies have been largely fulfilled already.

The book of Revelations identifies Babylon as the harlot city “where their Lord was crucified “ ie Jerusalem of 69 AD. That new Babylon was destroyed as prophesied in Matthew 24 and in Revelations. The new Jerusalem is the church, Christianity and this Kingdom of God, the spiritual kingdom is open in heaven since the first pentecost

The above statement is problematic. There are six references to Babylon in Revelation. They are:

Rev 17:8 “And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

Rev 16:19 “19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.”

Rev 17:5 “5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

Rev 18:2 “2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. “

Rev 18:9-11 “9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, 10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. 11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:”

Rev 18:21 “21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.”

In Rev 11:8, the “great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified” is Jerusalem.

I do not see where Babylon and Jerusalem are the same.

Thank you, Norski

Thank you for prayers. I believe it to be important to read and say them out loud. And have done so with the prayer posted. May many others join in.

I also believe that we are presently living in this time and day described below:

Revelation 8:6 “And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. 7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.”

I have never seen where Babylon and Jerusalem are equated. They are always separate and distinct. Generally set in opposition. One the city of man the other the city of God.

The Soviets called New York City, Tyre... interesting history of that island.

Jerusalem is the most favorite piece of real estate the Heavenly Father created. He intends to reclaim it.

Ezekiel 16:1 Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2 Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations,

3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.

4 And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all.

5 None eye pitied thee, to do any of these unto thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field, to the lothing of thy person, in the day that thou wast born.

6 And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.

7 I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the field, and thou hast increased and waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare.

8 Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine.

9 Then washed I thee with water; yea, I throughly washed away thy blood from thee, and I anointed thee with oil.

10 I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers’ skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk.

11 I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.

12 And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head.

13 Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom.

14 And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord GOD.

15 But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.

16 And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so.

17 Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them,

18 And tookest thy broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast set mine oil and mine incense before them.

19 My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey, wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord GOD.

20 Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,

21 That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?

22 And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, and wast polluted in thy blood.

23 And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, (woe, woe unto thee! saith the Lord GOD;)

24 That thou hast also built unto thee an eminent place, and hast made thee an high place in every street.

25 Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms.

26 Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger.

27 Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished thine ordinary food, and delivered thee unto the will of them that hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are ashamed of thy lewd way.

28 Thou hast played the whore also with the Assyrians, because thou wast unsatiable; yea, thou hast played the harlot with them, and yet couldest not be satisfied.

29 Thou hast moreover multiplied thy fornication in the land of Canaan unto Chaldea; and yet thou wast not satisfied herewith.

30 How weak is thine heart, saith the Lord GOD, seeing thou doest all these things, the work of an imperious whorish woman;

31 In that thou buildest thine eminent place in the head of every way, and makest thine high place in every street; and hast not been as an harlot, in that thou scornest hire;

32 But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband!

33 They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy whoredom.

34 And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.

35 Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD:

36 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them;

37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.

38 And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy.

39 And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.

40 They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords.

41 And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more.

42 So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry.

43 Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head, saith the Lord GOD: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations.

44 Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.

45 Thou art thy mother's daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.

46 And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.

47 Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.

48 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters.
49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

51 Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done.

52 Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.
53 When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them:

54 That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them.

55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.

56 For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride,

57 Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, which despise thee round about.

58 Thou hast borne thy lewdness and thine abominations, saith the LORD.

59 For thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast despised the oath in breaking the covenant.

60 Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant.

61 Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant.

62 And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD:

63 That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord GOD.

The book of Revelations draws on Daniel 7 and compares the fall of the old Babylon which persecuted God’s people to the New Babylon - the Jerusalem of 30-70 AD which also persecutes God’s people.

you can also see this in Jeremiah 51 used as a comparison with the fall

The book talks of the destruction of the Jerusalem of 69 AD by comparing it to the destruction of Babylon in the 6th century BC - in the old testament, babylon came and destroyed the temple in Jerusalem. The corrupt leaders of the new Babylon, Jerusalem, destroyed the body of Christ, the true temple (john 2:19-22)

This is also linked to the term “Armageddon” = that word comes from the Hebrew word Har-Magedon “Mount of Megiddo” — yet Megiddo is not built on a mountain but a plain.

The site of Megiddo was the site of King Josiah, having disobeyed God, went to fight the Pharaoh and was killed. This shock defeat became a symbol of a war and defeat.

Zechariah 12:9-11 talks about a war in which Jerusalem is defeated. Isaiah prophesied that Babylon’s destroyed would occur on the mount of assembly IS 14:13

This is clear throughout the text where we read in Rev 16:17-19 when thunder and earthquake came - this is what happened at the time of the crucifixion.

Rev 17 talks of the harlot (Jerusalem) riding the beast (the rOman empire) — until 69 AD the Jerusalem leaders could keep near autonomy but then they allowed the worship of the emperor Nero and this was the time the beast came to devour the harlot.

The harlot in 17:18 is an image of the city which sits on the seven hills that are the seven heads of the beast (meaning the first 7 imperators)

The other linkage is to the harlot-wife of Hosea. Jerusalem is the once faithful bride, but now a harlot, riding the seven headed beast (the roman empire) which will ultimately devour her.

Further emphasis is that harlot wears jewels in 17:14 and with gold, scarlet and precious stones - part of the 2nd temple’s furnishings.

Rev 17:6 talks of the harlot drunk with the blood of the witnesses

Finally in chapter 18 we read of rejoicing over the city that is filled with the blood of martyrs — this echoes Luke 11:50 about Jerusalem finally being held accountable for the blood of the prophets killed there

John was taken in the ‘spirit’ to the Lord's day... Peter penned a day with the Lord is as a thousand years.. The Lord's day begins at the literal return of Christ.

I Corinthians 10: 1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted

. 7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

********11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. ********

12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

John was taken in spirit to the Lord's day
john's reference is in context of the New Testament - Acts 20:7 "7 On the first day of the week[a] when we gathered to break bread, Paul spoke to them because he was going to leave on the next day, and he kept on speaking until midnight."

Following the New Testament, the first Christians recognized Sunday as the Lord's Days" - Sunday therefore is the "day of the Lord" - this is referenced in Justin Martyr who in his apologetics says

.I was in the Spirit is the starting point of john's VISION.

Peter penned a day with the Lord is as a thousand years -- you're taking a different letter by a different apostle and mixing it up.

the Apocalypse of john is emphatically a symbolical book with numbers such as 7,6,3 and 1000 strewn about - but each with a symbolical indication. 7 means completeness as in the seven spirits (the Holy Spirit) and 1000 means eternity, a long time. Neither of these is literally 7 or 1000

On the day we call the day of the Lord, the day of the sun, all who dwell in the city or country gather in the same place.

The memoirs of the apostles and the writings of the prophets are read...
Then brings bread and a cup of water and win mixed together... the priest offers praise and glory to the Father of the universe through the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..

The deacons give to those present the eucharisted bread, wine and water as the body and blood of Christ and take them to those who are absent

And 1 Corinthians 10 as you note talk of "eat the spiritual meat and the spiritual drink of the Rock that was Christ" - describes perfectly the eucharist as celebrated since the beginning of christianity.

Here is what the Didache, written in 55 AD (yes, scantily 25 years after the crucifixion) says.

Furthermore you quote a text that writes for our admonition, upon whom the end of the world are come - and that is clearly written by Paul to his readers. The end of the world, the end of the age, the end of hte 2nd temple HAPPENED in 69 AD
