Christian belief has halved in Britain in 35 years with just one in three people now identifying as Christian - while atheism and Islam continue to rise.
Figures published by the British Social Attitudes Survey reveal the widest ever margin between staunch atheists and believers who are certain that God exists.
Of almost 4,000 people polled by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), 38 per cent described themselves as Christian - a fall from 50 per cent in 2008 and 66 per cent in 1983.
Those identifying as Muslim increased from 1 per cent in 1983 to 3 per cent in 2008, and 6 per cent in 2018.
The survey shows that the biggest change is in the number of people who define themselves as "confident atheists", which rose from 10 per cent in 1998 to 18 per cent in 2008 and its record high of 26 per cent in 2018.
In contrast, researchers found that an overall 55 per cent of the population express some sort of belief in some kind of God.
Nancy Kelley, deputy chief executive at NatCen, said that the steady decline in religion and belief among the British public is "one of the most important trends in post-war history".
"As our society has become more secular, the role of religious institutions and religious identities in determining our moral and social norms has weakened. Other world views, such as scientific rationalism and liberal individual-ism, now play a more significant part in British society."

England was ground zero for Darwin’s theory of evolution. Christianity started its decline then. Charles Spurgeon commented on the beginning decline of Christianity in England in the 1880s.
Well, the C of E is doing a bang-up job eroding interest in Christianity.
Not good. When can the other collectives start tearing down or torching those offensive cathedrals?
I have to predict were next.
I see how 50-50 we are in politics, here, so can we extrapolate how down we might really be divided on Christianity?
England was also Ground Zero for Marx and Engels’ theories of political economy. And, come to think of it, King Henry VIII’s ideas of religion being subordinate to the State.
“One day a king will come, and the sword will rise again”
Soon they will get their wish. Unlimited sex with unlimited abortions. The stoning afterwords will kind of suck in a way though
Islam is a kind of mental plague that doesn’t kill the host but does render him or her a blithering idiot.
It appears that John Lennon was prophetic after all, at least as it concerns Merry Olde England.
They’ll wish they had not traveled this path. As will we.
So true. Also, don’t forget, Percy Shelley published a pamphlet on atheism 50 years before Darwin. So even the early Romantics were already heading in that direction, spurred by the AoE and other influences.
“Atheism and Islam on the Rise in the UK as Christianity Suffers ‘Dramatic Decline’”
It’s what happens when you keep turning the other cheek... and Christians seem to have an inexhaustible supply of them.
Islam will eventually overrun all other religions in the UK, and sharia will be the law of the land there. What happens in the UK tends to be a leading indicator of future conditions in the US, but the divergence in the US in this case will be the numerical strength of the hispanic population. In a few decades, as white Christians decline in numbers and fade into a minority, the browns and muslims will battle for control of what is now the American landmass.

Actually you are not less religious, you are changing religions.
England is lost. Lost. Lost.
Oh well. Cheerio !
So it only took a decade for the Islamic population to double. With that stunning growth rate, Muslims will be the majority in the near future. There are many majority Muslim nations in the world, so Brits can see beforehand what their future will look like. Lebanon is a great example, since that too used to be majority Christian before the Muslims took over.
Is it any wonder Britain is a weak shadow of its former greatness? That fascism rules the judicial system? That their problems are insurmountable without God?
When they say “Christianity” on the decline, do they really mean the Church of England?
Narrow is the gate.
