I've always viewed communion as a shared expression of faith. Many churches also make it a stipulation that the elements be given by a pastor or elder or whatever. My favorite one is the one day a year where we celebrate World Communion - knowing that despite our cultural differences, Christians everywhere are also participating.

However, many churches bring communion to shut-ins - but then the person is given the elements by a pastor or elder.

But - in the absence of a pastor or elder (although Aldrin was an elder!) I believe God was honored by the communion (communion between God and Aldrin) as Aldrin followed his heart of “Do this in remembrance of Me.”

Of course this is a rarity. I believe if at all possible communion should be done in community.

Interestingly, Jesus was not ordained nor certified by anyone. In fact, He was crucified by the “church” leaders of His day. I am authorized by Christ to celebrate the Lord’s Supper as is anyone who calls on the Lord- in fact, He directed his disciples to celebrate His death and atoning sacrifice with simple elements of bread and wine. No ritual, no magic, just remembrance of His grace towards sinful man.

My wife and I celebrate the Lords Supper nearly every day. I am free and who the Son makes free is free indeed.
