Abp. Michael Jackels is enforcing Catholic teaching
DUBUQUE, Iowa (ChurchMilitant.com) - The Left is crying foul after an archbishop banned voluntary sterilizations and contraceptives at Catholic health care facilities in his diocese.
For several months, Abp. Michael Jackels of the archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa has been working with the Catholic hospitals and health care facilities in the state to implement the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) revised guidelines for Catholic health care services.
While the main focus of the revisions centered on the aspects of new partnerships between health care providers, these guidelines reaffirmed the pastoral and spiritual responsibilities of Catholic health care and the necessity of care for the patient from the moment of conception to the point of natural death.
There are almost 20 Catholic hospitals in Iowa representing about 40% of all hospitals spread over four dioceses. In December, Covenant Medical Center in the archdiocese of Dubuque announced it would stop performing voluntary sterilizations via vasectomies and tubal ligations. MercyOne, formerly Mercy Medical, and CHI Health are some of the other Catholic hospitals in the state.
In an investigative report by Rewire.News, doctors, nurses and midwives spoke out against the new policy during a meeting in September 2018 fearing they would be guilty of practicing malpractice.
According to a handout obtained by Rewire.News, Abp. Jackels called these practices a "serious moral problem" and said voluntary sterilizations "should be completely moved out of and separated from Covenant Medical Center."

Good. Contraception is the root of abortion
Besides that it is evil and the Church does not allow it. It is up to the church hierarchy to make that known and to practice what the Church teaches.
Do these facilities take Medicare or Medicaid money?
I wonder if transgender treatments and surgeries will be addressed.
Here come the (Obama) judge!
I recall last year when a bishop came out with the same bans in his jurisdiction. It was subsequently pointed out that there were not Catholic hospitals in his area. Never heard another word from him.
I dont want Medicare or Medicaid paying for contraception. Thats my tax money
Your wants aren't relevant to overall Medicare or Medicaid coverage. They cover what they cover. As far as these hospitals go, as long as they don't take ANY Medicaid or Medicaid insurance money for ANY procedure or provider, then I don't see why they can't set their own rules regarding the denial of contraception.
Might I refer you to the Supreme Court decision in favor of the Little Sisters of the Poor?
As I understand that decision, it grants religious organizations an exemption from having to provide contraceptives to their employees. This policy isn’t about the hospital’s employees. It covers procedures the hospitals refuse to perform on patients.
It is a religiously-run hospital. It should be able to decline to offer whichever procedures it pleases. Just like not forcing a Christian baker to prepare a wedding cake for a gay wedding.
Is there a statute or regulation saying that any hospital receiving federal funds cannot refuse to offer certain procedures for religious reasons? I have not heard of such a rule but if it exists, I would venture that it places an undue burden on the free excercise of religion and would be struck down as unconstitutional.
Give up the Federal money then. They want to take the king’s shilling without having to do the king’s bidding.
bump, alleluia, alleluia
We have not king, but Jesus.
Fedzilla serves US, we do not serve Fedzilla.
Your love of baby-killing is out of place on this forum.
"Fedzilla" is another way of saying taxpayers. What the Church wants is to help itself to other people's money and then use it as it sees fit. That makes them thieves and parasites. The solution is simple. Stop taking taxpayer money.
Oh, and BTW no baby was ever killed by a vasectomy.
I pay taxes ... I don’t approve of any of my tax money being used by anybody for mutilations or baby killing. If you want to have yourself mutilated, go to a pagan hospital.
Now ... if you want to abolish Medicare and Medicaid entirely ... I’m 100% FOR that.
We all have things we don't approve of when it comes to spending tax dollars. I don't approve of spending tax money on abortions, but the contraceptive piece doesn't bother me. But we don't have a system where each individual gets to direct the use of their own tax contribution. And a system the did have that feature would quickly become an oligarchy because something like 10% of people pay something like 90% of the taxes. Imagine if that 10% could get together and direct their tax contributions against the 90%.
The Congress set up Medicare and Medicaid and those systems have coverage rules. If Catholic hospitals don't like those rules, they can opt out and forego the money. The Catholic Church has 1.3 Billion subscribers. That makes it the biggest corporation in the world. It's been accumulating wealth for centuries. I don't see why it can't cover the revenue shortfall if it doesn't like the rules.
if you want to abolish Medicare and Medicaid entirely ... Im 100% FOR that.
Me too!
What a bunch of baloney! This is about nothing more than forcing the hated Catholics to kneel before the power of Government Almighty.
To hell with that.
Special pleading bullshit. When they want to follow their “conscience” they’re Catholic hospitals and the ordinary rules don’t apply to them. When they want to suck on the public tax tit they’re just part of the good old America health care system.
