France begins debate over how to rebuild Notre Dame, starting with a contest to design the spire
The Washington Post ^ | April 17, 2019 | Griff Witte

But Prime Minister Édouard Philippe upended expectations with an announcement of an international competition to replace the iconic spire that collapsed into Monday’s inferno. He also raised the prospect of a 21st-century twist atop a 12th-century creation.

“This is obviously a huge challenge, a historic responsibility,” Philippe said, noting that the new design would have to be “adapted to technologies and challenges of our times.”

Yup.

And there will be two of them. Or four.

There will be at least one very prominent crescent.

Design the spire? Why not use the design of the spire that was there?

I get the feeling that the rebuilt Notre Dame is going resemble the job that was done to Soldier Field.

Why would it be hard to rebuild it just like it was? Oh yeah, because the French are submissive weasels, and want to appease their muslim pals. They’ll most likely put up four minarets and a crescent, or some hideous “modern” style spire.

I think part of this rebuild issue is that there probably aren’t more than a dozen master-master craftsmen in the world with the skills that people had in the 1163.

As a kid in rural Alabama, we had one older gentleman who had his families older farm, and a barn of a unique design (built in the 1880s). Carpenters came miles around to admire the design and look of the barn. All of those skills diminished in the past hundred years. Barn no longer stands today because of termite issues.

The Catholic Church needs to step up to the plate pay & oversee the rebuilding of Notre Dame or some god-awful modern architectural, anti-Christian, anti-European (as well as anti-France) monstrosity will take its place. Norte Dame needs to be reconstructed as near as possible back to what it was. Nothing else is Norte Dame, every Frenchmen & Frenchwomen should know that! If France means anything to them this is what they will demand!

I fear British architect Norman Foster. He designed a roof over the British Museum and that’s enough for the cultural elite.

Technically speaking, the Church does not own the building.

Sadly, given the Church’s recent track record of architectural abominations such as the Taj Mahony in L.A., we can’t assume that they’d come up with something better than the secular authorities.

Um, yeah, they are not really in a position to demand anything from the State and have not been since 1789.

True!

There’s the power of PR - good PR & bad PR.
That’s all they have but it works if used properly!
The could maneuver Macron into to looking like a French hero or a sap. The question is do they have the skill to do so and do they want to?

While I agree, a potential problem is the RCC does not own Notre Dame....France does.

I'd imagine the RCC will have input on the rebuild...but so will France.

This should go well. Design by committee.

Wasn’t the camel their last design?

A minaret or maybe a crescent moon wind vane?
