I questioned this on another thread today. Notre Dame Cathedral had to have been officially consecrated as a Roman Catholic Church. It still offers Catholic services. Even the alter, and its religious artifacts, like the Crown of Thorns were probably consecrated as well. So in order for to it be used for any other purpose than a Catholic Church, it would have to be deconsecrated. It will be interesting to see how Rome would react to any plan to change it. However, I don’t have any faith in the current Pope to do the right thing.

It's not only a Catholic church, it's the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris. Every diocese has a cathedral church which is the formal seat of the bishop. It's not really an option.

The situation in France is complicated by the fact that the government confiscated (== stole) all of the church buildings during the revolution, and never gave them back So Notre Dame is government property which the government allows the church to use free of charge. Strictly speaking, if the government wanted to bulldoze Notre Dame and put up a mosque next to a strip club, there is nothing the church can do legally to stop them.
