MEXICO CITY - A Nicaraguan bishop said he will leave the country indefinitely as concerns for his security increase - presumably the product of his criticisms of the Central American nations president.
Auxiliary Bishop Silvio Baez Ortega of Managua said April 10 he would travel to Rome - at the request of Pope Francis - after finishing Easter celebrations in Nicaragua, which has convulsed with violence for more than a year. Police and paramilitaries loyal to President Daniel Ortega have crushed protests calling for his ouster, and dissidents have been forced to flee the country.
I give thanks to Pope Francis, who, having confirmed my ministry and my style as bishop, has asked me to go to Rome for a period of time. I carry in my heart of a pastor the joy and sadness, the pain and hopes of the people of Nicaragua. Thank you all for your love! Baez tweeted April 10.
I can tell you with total sincerity, at this time, I am experiencing great pain in my heart, the pain of not being able to be physically in my loved Nicaraguan community, Baez told a news conference April 10, according the newspaper La Prensa. I have not asked to leave. The Holy Father called me.
I am not abandoning the people of God.
I am not going to ignore Nicaragua.

Ortega, the last vestige of communism dressed in the veil of freedom. The sooner this evil, retromingent charlatan is gone, the better for the world.
My daughter-in-law is Nicaraguan, her parents former Sandinistas, but very good people - Baptists actually. I’ve been there working with orphans and street kids a number of times - the poverty takes your breath away.
But now most of the Sandinistas no longer support Ortega. They have seen him for what he is - a power-hungry dictator who could care less for any ideology - his ideology is himself.
Worst part is his wife is actually in charge, he made her his VP, and she is a real practicing witch.
Apart from divine intervention, Nicaragua is headed the same direction as Venezuela.
Pope likely supported the Sandanistas as a priest and a bishop.
It would be easier to get rid of Ortega if the Pppe wasn’t such a commie symp himself.
Ah - a little different in Nicaragua.
Two conservatives ran against Ortega in ‘07/08 - I was there. Neither would bow out to the other. Each got 33% of the vote, Ortega got 34%, then had a run-off against the one who got the most of the two.
He won with 2/3 of the people rejecting him! And because neither conservative would bow out. Sickening. They knew it would put Ortega in office too.
Once in office, he changed the Supreme Court, the laws, then made it so he could be elected for life. Once in office, elections were corrupt.
Far different from Venezuela.
