Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Colossians 1

Paul’s Labor for the Church

24 Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. 25 I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness— 26 the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. 27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.

Since Paul spent a lot of time in the slammer, it's possible he was referring to that when he speaks of his suffering. He also could be referring to the physical abuse he has suffered, or even the emotional pain of being rejected by his own People. Nevertheless, he rejoices!

Dear Father in Heaven,
Hallowed Be Your Name
Oh LORD, Our God,
King of the Universe,
Ancient of Days,
Our Rock and Our Redeemer!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,
For You Alone Are Worthy; You Alone Are Holy;

We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Although all of the Apostles met with persecution, and nearly all of them were eventually martyred (except John, who died of old age, exiled on a rocky little island), it could be argued that Paul encountered the most miserable time of them all. He lists some of his sufferings in his second letter to the Corinthians:

(Chapter 11)
16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool. But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would, but as a fool. 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does, I too will boast. 19 You gladly put up with fools since you are so wise! 20 In fact, you even put up with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about. 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I. 23 Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. 27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever, knows that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me. 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.

Although this litany of abuse may sound like a complaint, Paul is actually BOASTING about it. He is proud to have gone through all these things for the sake of the Gospel.

Some of the most horrible suffering that happens in our lives seam so unbearable at the time that many of us would like to just give up. (As anyone who has stuck with this thread for eight years would know, I myself have been through some pretty weird stuff!)

And yet, God has given me the Grace and gift of sharing these weird stories, and applying them to the teaching of His Word. Just think...if I had a boring, comfortable life, I wouldn't have any stories to tell!

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
