Lists of Priests Accused of Sexual Abuse Are Spilling Out Across the Country

PITTSBURGH — It was a list Charles L. Bailey Jr. had wanted to see for years: the names of the priests in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse who had been credibly accused of sexual abuse.

Sign Up For the Morning Briefing Newsletter

Mr. Bailey, 67, a longtime local advocate for survivors of abuse by priests, had heard excuses for why such a list was impossible to release. The last bishop said naming accused priests would be a violation of the Ten Commandments. The current bishop said he would not disclose the names, citing the request of unnamed victims.

But then on Dec. 3, Mr. Bailey got a call from a local reporter. It was up, on the diocesan website. Fifty-seven priests. None were still in ministry and most were deceased, including, there on Page 4, the priest who had repeatedly raped Mr. Bailey when he was not yet a teenager.

As the Catholic Church faces a wave of federal and state attorney general investigations into its handling of sex abuse, bishops around the country have struggled with how to react. Some have locked down defensively. Others are waiting on guidance from the Vatican, which instructed American bishops last month to wait on taking any collective action until the new year.

But dozens of bishops have decided to take action by releasing lists of the priests in their dioceses who were credibly accused of abuse. And they are being released at an unprecedented pace.

The disclosures have trickled out week by week — 10 names in Gaylord, Mich.; 28 in Las Cruces, N.M.; 28 in Ogdensburg, N.Y.; 15 in Atlanta; 34 in San Bernardino, Calif., among many others. All 15 dioceses in Texas have agreed to release lists.

credibly accused

That's a pretty fuzzy description. Maybe charged with a crime might be better.

I left the church in the 1980’s because of the refusal of the church to do anything but protect their predatory priests.

While this is bad. The list of teachers accused of sexual abuse is a magnitude larger. There are ten times the number of teachers fondling little boys and girls. The priesthood does not have a monopoly on pedophiles. But teachers are often democrats so you don’t hear about the thousands of liberal pedophiles telling our children its ok to be a gay child.

Wish I could remember the names of two of the priests I knew about but it was too many years ago.

Yep ... lots of people calling for the Church to be cleaned up. And rightly so. And when that is done ...

Will they then call for the government schools to be cleaned up?

Of course not.

The Roman Catholic Church needs to have a house cleaning and make this information public. If they won’t cooperate with the authorities they’ve lost any and all credibility.

The list that was published in my diocese contained the names of priests long since departed this world.

I grew up in that area and was taught by some of these priests and at least one was a parish pastor...

I can remember very well my parents and a few other parents having bad feelings about him, never said, but I thought it was probably that he was taking church money...

many of these priests on the list are deceased and had one accusation after they died.....

I believe this group and the Catholic church is being targeted to get big payoffs.....both by shark lawyers and also by individuals who want "in"....

there certainly IS a terrible problem and the way to handle it is thru CRIMINAL courts, not thur incidents that are based on innuendo, decades old with the accused dead or very elderly....how do you defend this.....you can't....

prove these crime in criminal courts, otherwise I find many to be suspect....

The Catholic Church is caught in cognitive dissonance quicksand. The present public face, and much of the leadership, is “pro-gay,” “no judgement,” and ignores sexual, particularly homosexual, sin. They are following the zeitgeist and PC mores of the day.

Yet at the same time, they are being torn apart, bankrupted, and abandoned by parishioners, specifically because of their decades-long failure to address sexual sin, particularly homosexuality, in strident terms and deeds.

I can’t see how they escape this with present thinking and leadership.

Indeed, its the same problem among many Christian denominations, albeit the media is focusing on the Catholic Church, and in response, many denominations have simply gone 100% pro-homosexual in all ways.

Priesthood doesn’t have a monopoly on it, but it is an epidemic hotspot, and a homosexual mafia has held a tight grip on the Church for some time now.

I bet this was the deal Obama cut with the Pope.
“Keep supporting my agenda and I will keep you and the Catholic Church out of the court room.”

I’m beginning to think he made the same agreement with the Mormon Church.

THANK YOU! 'Nobly' providing names of priests/clergy who are long dead or defrocked is diverting attention from NOW. Where are the names from the 80's, 90's and NOW?? Are we to believe that homosexual and pedophile priests are a PAST, not PRESENT ,and ongoing, abomination??
I want parish to Vatican cleansing of ALL pedophile AND homosexual priests. Arrest and sue the offenders from the past AND present.

A district attorney has to bring a case in state courts. Read the PA Grand Jury Report regarding the lack of criminal prosecutions. Better to sue in civil court and try and get the DA to file criminal charges.

Maybe it would be best to keep these priests together and away from Children. Letting them roam around doesn’t sound good either.

Why let them live? Seriously, convict and execute them. All of them. Reset the Catholic church with non-homosexual leadership.
