Because it was a poll of Protestants by Protestants (I think Lifeway Research is SBC. If you want stats on Catholics relative to alcohol, i do not see much:

50 percent of Protestants affirmed gambling was a sin, versus 15 percent of Catholics; that getting drunk was a sin: 63 percent of Protestants, 28 percent of Catholics; gossip: 70 percent to 45 percent: homosexual activity or sex: 72 percent to 42 percent. - Ellison Research, March 11, 2008 http://ellisonresearch.com/releases/20080311.

Numerous studies from both the United States and Europe have suggested that Protestants consume less alcohol but perceived great problems with the substance. In contrast Roman Catholics consume more alcohol but do not perceived its consumption as problematic. The reason for this may be based in the distant past. Recent research (Engs 1991a; 1995) has suggested that in antiquity different drinking cultures developed in the Northern and in the Mediterranean areas of western Europe. This was due to a number of factors including the ecosystem, seasonal variations, climate, and socio-political structures. - http://www.indiana.edu/~engs/articles/cathprot.htm

Over 12,000 university students from every state were administered the Student Alcohol Questionnaire during the 1993-1994 academic year. ...Religion: Almost half of all Protestants, whose religion does not allow drinking (Mormon, Baptist, Pentecostal, etc.), and about a fifth of Protestants whose religion does allow drinking were abstainers. In contrast few Catholics and Jews fell into this category (p < .001, X2 =58.3). Among drinkers, Catholics (p < .001, X2 =61.3) had the highest percentage of Heavy Drinkers compared to the other groups. - http://www.indiana.edu/~engs/articles/jade.htm

Catholic countries consume significantly more alcohol than Protestant (or neither religion dominant) countries." [Source: Stanton Peele (Fellow, The Lindesmith Center, New York). "Utilizing Culture and Behaviour in Epidemiological Models of Alcohol Consumption and Consequences for Western Nations" in Alcohol & Alcoholism (vol. 32; 1997), pg. 51-64.] - http://www.adherents.com/largecom/com_romcath.html

Even though the Catholic Church opposes abortion and same-sex marriage, Catholics in Latin America tend to be less conservative than Protestants on these kinds of social issues. On average, Catholics are less morally opposed to abortion, homosexuality, artificial means of birth control, sex outside of marriage, divorce and drinking alcohol than are Protestants

Protestants who participate in religious services at least once a week are somewhat more likely to oppose abortion and divorce – and considerably more likely to oppose homosexuality, sex outside of marriage and drinking alcohol – than are Catholics who attend Mass at least weekly. These differing views on social issues may help explain why many former Catholics who have become Protestants say they were looking for a church that “places greater importance on living a moral life” (a median of 60%). - http://www.pewforum.org/2014/11/13/religion-in-latin-america;m cf. http://www.pewforum.org/2014/11/13/chapter-5-social-attitudes/

Globally 90% of evangelical leaders reject the so-called prosperity gospel, the notion that God will grant wealth and good health to those who have enough faith. 52% (75% in the “Global South”) believe drinking alcohol is incompatible with being a good evangelical, 97% likewise reject astrology, 96% reject reincarnation, 95% reject denying Jesus is the only way to salvation, 92% reject yoga. - http://www.pewforum.org/2011/06/22/global-survey-of-evangelical-protestant-leaders/
