I recently bought my wife a a late model used car from a dealership. They took the plates off of her old car and put them on the new car. You usually have 48 hours to contact your insurance carrier to change the coverage.

We’ve relocated several times throughout DH’s career. We learned that all states didn’t have the same laws and procedures. Very confusing.

It all depends on the state. In CA plates stay with the car. Here in MO plates go with the the car’s owner. Here, you trade in a car, you put your old plates on your new car. Yes, you have to go to Lic. Bureau to do paper work, pay taxes!, etc.
