Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Acts of the Apostles

(New Testament)

Acts 10

Peter at Cornelius’s House

The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along. 24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”

27 While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. 28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean. 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”

30 Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[b] and praising God.

Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

(End of Scripture Passage)

One would think that this wonderful Vision, the simultaneous communications to two total strangers in two different cities miles apart, and the subsequent miraculous conversion of Cornelius and his whole household would be enough to cure St. Peter of his prejudices forever. Think again. Perhaps it is a good thing that God chose to include Peter's struggle with prejudice so that we ourselves can understand the nature of our own struggle with sin. Paul shares his own insight with this struggle in Romans 7, which, coincidentally, was in my own personal reading this morning! (How 'bout that!)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The music scene in 1970's Boston had some interesting characters. Along with musicians, roadies, fans, promoters, songwriters, and venue owners, there were also a certain amount of "wannabees" who trailed along, wanting people to "set their awesome poetry to music" and asking if they could sing a song with the band, etc. One of these was a girl named Darlene. At least Darlene was her GIVEN name. One day she showed up at a songwriters' get-together, and she was wearing flowing silks and had painted a spot on her forehead.

"My name is Dharma now," she said. "I've become a Hindu."

Well, OK, Darlene...er...Dharma. It's a free country. Whatever floats yer boat, etc, were the responses.

The next time I saw Darlene, the silks and spot were gone and she was wearing a hijab.

"Don't call me Dharma now, as my name is now Dafiya. I have become a Muslim."

I was stunned. Even in the Seventies, Long before 9/11, and before I was Born Again, I KNEW this was not going to be easy for her to "change back" when she lost interest. As an ardent "feminist (at the time), I felt that, by choosing Islam, she was betraying all that women had fought for to achieve equality in our culture. We knew how women in Saudi Arabia were "under the veil", were not allowed to drive, and were trapped in polygamous marriages and so on. Even my little knowledge of that culture was enough to start a lecture from me, chastising her for this "choice" and warning her that it would not be as easy to discard when she finally was sick of it. I was met with a harsh rebuke, and I ended up leaving the party with anger burning in me at this foolish woman.

That was 40 years ago. In retrospect, I have prayed for Darlene, and hoped she was able to escape. The point is, though, in The Land of The Free, she was free to make her silly decisions. And since that time, I have been lectured by people who thought that MY conversion to Christianity was the wrong thing to do. But at least I won't be put to death as an apostate if for some crazy reason, decided to "change". ( won't ever happen!)

I can't even imagine the difficulties Cornelius would be encountering in his new-found Faith. He was risking being rejected by his Employer (The Roman Army), his countrymen (who worshiped the Roman gods and goddesses), the Jewish people (who probably already hated him for being an occupier of their homeland), and the Believers themselves, who still considered themselves Jews, albeit of the Messianic sect. I'm sure he got plenty of lectures from well-meaning people who may have felt he made a very stupid decision to involve himself with these renegades. But, as there is no record of Cornelius ever turning back, and since the early Church considers him a saint in heaven, we can infer that he did NOT.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
