Monks of Tibhirine to be Beatified in Algeria in December

Cardinal Becciu will preside over the ceremony of the feast of the Immaculate Conception

A bishop, seven Trappist monks and 11 other religious men and women killed by extremists in Algeria in the 1990s will be beatified on December 8, according to the Algerian bishops.

Mgr Pierre Claverie and Companions will be beatified during a ceremony at the Basilica of Santa Cruz in the Algerian city of Oran on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Cardinal Giovanni Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, will represent Pope Francis ceremony.

The Algerian bishops described the event as a “great joy”. “May their example help us in our life today,” the bishops added.

Is the example of Christlike acceptance of suffering and death admired these days? It doesn't seem like it.

They could have fled, they could have fought. They did not. That's my idea of beati!
