Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Gospel of John

(New Testament)

John 11

28 After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 “Where have you laid him?” he asked.

“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

35 Jesus wept.

36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”

(End of Scripture Passage)

The answer to the question "What is the Shortest Verse in The Bible?" is contained in Today's Reading. The answer is, of course, Verse 35, "Jesus Wept". Those two little words, comprising of three syllables, are absolutely packed with meaning. The verse immediately following (36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”) completes the thought, and shows us the Humanity of Jesus. The next scene, however will show us His Divinity.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The first and only time I ever saw my Dad weep with grief was when he found out his little sister Kay had died from heart failure. She was in her early 40's, and had always had a weak heart from having rheumatic fever as child.

Although she lived in Oklahoma, her husband brought her all the way to Houston for her heart surgery, as the world was in wonder over the first successful heart transplant in the USA that had just taken place. Since he could afford it (he was an oil executive during the Oil Boom in the 60's), my uncle got the same world-famous doctor who had done the heart transplant to perform the open-heart surgery, which was only replacing valves...not the entire heart. It should have been a cinch.

The surgery was indeed perfect...a masterpiece. But when the heart-lung machine was removed, Kay's already weakened heart refused to start up again, and she passed away on the operating table.

The shock and grief that engulfed my family was overwhelming. "Why couldn't the guy who was world famous for the first successful American Heart Transplant save her?"

My cousin, who is my age and has the same first name as I have, was so traumatized by this event (she was 10 at the time) that she never got over it. To this day she still remarks about it.

The truth of the matter is that the World-Famous Doctor was just a human being like everyone else. I feel certain that he did not make any errors, and that he worked frantically to resuscitate Kay when her heart refused to start up again.

The response of my family to this tragedy was similar to the family and friends of Lazarus. "If Jesus had come sooner, He could have healed him." "He opened the eyes of the blind, so why didn't he save Lazarus?" "If You had been here, he wouldn't have died." etc.

Perhaps "Jesus Wept", not because His friend had died, but because all the people who SHOULD know Better just "didn't get it."

In any case, we see the depth of emotion and compassion that shows Jesus' humanity.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
