Leading Russian scholar admits: Ukrainian Church has right to Independence

Russian religious expert Sergei Chapnin explains why the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople has every reason to grant the status of autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

In an op-ed published by Vedomosti, Chapnin noted that the issue of Ukrainian autocephaly dates back to the early 20th century, while those associated with the status of the Kyiv church goes back to the late 17th century. "But if the Patriarch of Constantinople preserves the continuity of his institutions for almost 1500 years, the Moscow Patriarchate, after the total destruction of all church institutions in 1917 and the re-emergence of some of them in the mid-1940s, cannot even think in terms of centuries.

In the end, when it was necessary to investigate and determine the status of the Kyiv church at the end of the 17th century, Moscow failed to figure out the content of historical documents, but this did not stop them from suggesting that Constantinople in 1686 gave them Ukraine in its entirety."

The religious expert stressed that the first unpleasant discovery for Moscow was that the Patriarchate of Constantinople believes that they had never handed over the territory of Ukraine to the Russian church. "Due to the complicated historical circumstances of the second half of the 17th century, he gave Moscow the right to ordain the Kyiv metropolitans and become a church court in relation to them. These rights were transferred to Moscow for an indefinite period, but not forever. In other words, the Patriarch of Constantinople could recall his decision at any time. And, it seems, this time has come."

This cuts at the very heart of modern Russia's ideological basis for owning Ukraine at every level, not just religious.

Meanwhile, lets use Russia as the excuse for a politicized CIA and FBI to conduct a coup against an elected US President, right here in the USA.

So please excuse me when I say I could not care less about the political struggles between the Orthodox Russian and Ukraine churches. Dangers to the Republic are a lot closer to home.

Europe is Western Civilization and Ukraine is right in the thick of the conflict for its soul.

The US Deep State Soviet-style behavior doesn’t negate the impact of Russia’s destabilzation if Western society, if anything they are living proof of the Soviet Union’s continuing legacy and infiltration.

Ukraine is one of the central spiritual battlefields for the soul of Europe and Western Civilization as a whole.

The US Deep State’s Soviet-style behavior does not negate the impact of Russia’s destabilization of Western society. >f anything, the Deep State isa living proof of the Soviet Union’s continuing legacy and influence.

Forget it. I can’t type today. But it’s also my auto-text thing that gives me trouble. But one more try:

1) It would be nice if Russia were more interested in helping the U.S. combat so-called common threats rather than try to rebuild the Soviet Union under false religious auspices. They refuse to move on from the Cold War.

2) It’s rude they host their playground ‘war game’ antics (with China no less) on the anniversary of September 11th. And even with the U.S. under Trump, Russia refuses to help the U.S. address North Korea in any meaningful way, Syria, Afghanistan, the list goes on. All they do is sabotage and irritate with things like chemical poisonings om UK soil.

3) It is not surprising that many Middle Eastern terrorists received their training, backing, and anti-Israel propaganda from Russia back in the day. Like Yasser Arafat who spent considerable time in Moscow.

4) Putin has yet to truly shed his KGB garb.

I don’t know why so many Americans expect impossible. Russia (or China) will always try to back-stab the US and vice versa. Empires fight for influence, play geopolitical chess. The fact that Putin was an KGB agent doesn’t change anything. If Russia would be more democratic or return to monarchy their politics towards the US wont change.
