Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Gospel of John

(New Testament)

John 9

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some claimed that he was.

Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”

But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”

10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.

11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”

12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.

“I don’t know,” he said.

(End of Scripture Passage)

In this very interesting Passage, we read of a man who didn't even ask for healing, and received it. This Chapter also addresses the false idea of "Karma", that which assumes that sickness or "bad luck" are because of something one does or what our parents did. (This is not quite the same as the principle of "Sowing and Reaping", which is Biblical) The Man-Born-Blind didn't even know Who Jesus was. All he knew was "Once I was blind, but now I see."

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today's reading contains a puzzle which has been with me since childhood. Why on earth would Jesus make mud out of spit, and put it on this poor man's eyes? Jesus had already explained to His Disciples that the man's blindness was not due to anything bad he had done, or even his parents, so why would Jesus not just pronounce him healed, and "Hallelujah!" be on His way to do more wonderful things? It was troubling.

More recently, there has been a TV series that has run two seasons already, exposing a "religion" that allegedly exploits and abuses people. The gist of the "religion" (again, small "r" and scare quotes) is that mental illness, anxiety, and bad behavior comes from memories ("engrams") of past lives and ancestors which lodge in a person's brain and affect their mental and emotional health. The "religion" uses a process to identify these "engrams" and eliminating them, thus clearing the person for greater power and freedom.

We don't need to name the "religion" in this thread, but, as you see, it is not based upon any original idea. Eastern religions refer to these bad memories as "Karma". If something bad happens to you, it is because your soul, in a former life, did something to deserve it. Helping the poor and sick could be construed as "interfering with a person's Karma", depriving them of the opportunity to atone for sins of a past life, and thus dooming them to more reincarnations of suffering to make up for your interference. YIKES!

It seems that the Disciples had some similar notions, maybe without the reincarnation part, but certainly in the "You or you ancestors must have done something to deserve this" part. This thinking pervades our culture to this day. Even Rodgers and Hammerstein pushed the idea in this perennial favorite: Something Good from The Sound of Music.

So...it wasn't "Karma" or "bad engrams from a past life" or even his own sins that caused this man to be born blind. Jesus tells us why...it will give Glory to The One True God. So what does He do? He spits on the ground, makes mud, puts it on the man's eyes, and tells him to wash it off. And then, after this miracle of sight, the man is brought before the authorities and lambasted. Not only that, the authorities go after his parents too!

When I first came to Faith in Christ, I wanted to tell EVERYBODY. I naively thought they would be happy for me that I had been born again. Such was not the case. Since my milieu was the Rock Music Scene, I immediately faced ridicule and ostracism. My band broke up, and I lost my entire circle of friends, and a lot of members of my family too. Oh well...I guess that was the saliva and the mud. But I have been washed clean. And, Once I was Blind, but now I see.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Jesus Heals The Man Born Blind"

ND as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.

And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

Jesus answered, Neither hath this man
sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should
be made manifest in him.
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.

Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

Puzzling no one seemed real happy for the blind man that now saw, but rather disturbed by it.

Interesting how there is no set pattern to the way Jesus healed. Otherwise, it would be a “religion” or worse...in New Age lines, a “spell.”

Joining in prayer, left that other site, for the Peace of Jerusalem and for revival in our beloved America.

Indeed! there are several descriptions of Jesus healing a blind person, and they are all different.
