I remembered that they took the vow of “celibacy.” I often wondered why it just covered marriage and not something a little more strong like chastity. I may be wrong.

Chastity is required of everyone. It means reserving sex for the marital relationship. Celibacy means abstinence from sex.

Latin caelebs originally just meant "unmarried." Celibacy (Latin caelibatus) meant being unmarried. A rich Roman who was unmarried was caelebs even if he was having sex with his slaves.

My Webster's dictionary published in 1960 still has "state of being unmarried" as the only meaning for "celibacy." The meaning of "not sexually active with another person recently" is a fairly recent development.
