Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Gospel of John

(New Testament)

John 1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b] is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

(End of Scripture Passage)

For nine years, this thread has mostly been dedicated to what Christians call The "Old Testament", and what Jews call "The Hebrew Scriptures". There have been a number of forays into the NT during the Topical Studies, like the one we completed yesterday with The Marriage Supper of the Lamb. However, we have not actually gone through a New Testament Book chapter by chapter.

Today we begin the Gospel of John, a personal favorite. It is deep, and somewhat controversial, so buckle your seat belts.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God
Hallowed Be Your Most Holy Name,
Help us to see with Your Eyes,
Help us to hear with Your Ears,
And help us to see through the deceptions of this world.
Our Intellect and Education will not save us.
Our Careers won't save us.
Our Beloved Families can't save us.
Our Government, and even our precious Founding Documents can't save us.
Nor can our leaders, political or religious.
None have the power to save us, not our religion, friends, lovers, spouses, brothers, sisters, or parents,
Fame, fortune, ancestors or children.
We Must all stand before You, and You are the final Judge.
Only You have the Power and Grace to Save.

We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According to Your Will and Promise.
We Pray For the People and Leaders of Israel,
that They Will Look to You for the Protection
and Prosperity of their Nation.
We Also Pray For Revival in our own Beloved USA.

We Pray For The Leaders of Our Nation,
May They Be Inspired and Led By You,
And Please Guide Them in All Things.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

ML/LTOS

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The History of Cinema is just a little over 100 years old, but like the history of aeronautics, has undergone more changes in 100 years than most other arts or sciences. From hand-cranked Nickelodeons to IMAX and CGI, the panorama of progress in film-making would baffle the early pioneers. (And I wonder what the Wright Brothers would think of the Space Shuttle!). Still, all the Special Effects and Technical Magic are worthless without good writing. We see this now manifested in endless sequels in the same genre, stuntman and special effects wizardry replaced by a computer program, and CGI characters being voiced by overpaid actors reading a hackneyed script. Still, perhaps because the public has been conditioned to accept this, the movies still make lots of money.

Back-In-The-Day, the script was more important than the Special Effects. The Original Series of Star Trek got most of their props and scenery from thrift stores, but the scripts were written by such revered Sci-Fi authors as Harlan Ellison, D. C. Fontana, and Gene L. Coon. The same could be said about the old Twilight Zone series, with its cardboard sets and compelling scripts.

One of the most prestigious awards was the Oscar or Emmy for the best writing. More than once, the Winning Screenwriter would start his or her acceptance speech with a familiar line and a knowing smile.

"In The Beginning was the Word."

Yes...I remember that line being said more than once. But I also remember hearing that line in church. What did it MEAN, anyway?

Well, of course, the screenwriter was saying that you can't have a movie without a script. And you can't have a GOOD movie without a GOOD script. So the WRITER is perhaps the most important person in the project. (Nowadays...not so much it seems)

The memory of hearing it in Church, though...that was a mystery. What did it mean?

When I stated that The Gospel of John is controversial, I wasn't kidding. The Book starts off with a bang:

"In The Beginning was the Word."

The Greek word is Logos, from which we derive the English words Logic, Logo, Logistics, and many other words. It means so much more than mere writing, and in context is referring to the Pre-Existant Christ, the Eternal Son of God. The Logos is Eternal, and has no beginning or end. This is a concept that boggles our finite human mind, so naturally we try to analyze it or explain it away. A certain Bible translator went so far as to add an indefinite article (not present in the Original Greek) to cause the Passage to make sense to him, since he had already formed his opinion and had to twist Scripture to match it.

Of Course, we could spend Eternity debating the FIRST LINE of the Gospel of John, and never get the Message of his Gospel, so tomorrow we will continue our story. But today you and I have just shared my absolute favorite Passage in the ENTIRE Bible, so you will have to forgive me if I have waxed rhapsodic a bit. I have set this entire passage to music, and like to sing it, so that I will never forget it.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart from generation to generation. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance..” Psalm 33 NASB
