I am not Catholic but i think Charles Pope makes sense in the post from Salvation as do some of his other writings.
Being saved by grace through faith which is showed by works ( all three works together ) takes nothing away from what he said.
If all sins were thought to be the same then why would Paul insist on getting the adulterer out of the Church but at the same time admitting that all have sinned, and that he himself was a sinner.
We tend to get away from the real subject so far that no one has any idea of what the argument is about to begin with.
Ah, okay, I missed the specific question.
There is a difference between living a life of sin openly and in defiance to God versus sinning and being repentant. In the case of the adulterer, he was called out for his sin, but was not repentant, and was to be treated as a heathen until he repented. This is church discipline.
