There is really only one way to address this: a canonical penal trial posthaste.

Statute of limitations is up civilly and criminally here in the US. however, for child abuse allegations, there is no canonical statute of limitations. The Pope is the only one with authority to judge, though he could delegate it to the Roman Rota; frankly he can’t have credibility on the matter any other way. Bonus points if he revives the liturgical rite of degradation of a cleric simply so he can use it on McCarrick.

Such grave and publicly scandalous accusations demand that the faithful know it is being addressed in a real trial with a real decision, followed by concrete and public punishment if guilt is ascertained. No more bishops scampering home to hide without trial and without possibility of restoration of justice.
