Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Shared Meal

(New Testament)

Mark 2

Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners

13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.

21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

(End of Scripture Passage)

These three incidents were covered separately when we looked at them in the Gospel of Matthew. Here they are again, and harmonize beautifully with what we have already read.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Church Supply and Book Store where I worked in the early eighties shared a building with the headquarters of a very large Mainline Denomination that had become very liberal in the Twentieth Century. It was a place of dark oak bookshelves, formal leather chairs, and brooding tradition. While the bookstore carried all the current Christian Books, as well a Sunday School Supplies, "decor" and more traditional Church Supplies such as Choir Robes and Vestments, the Denominational Office seemed to be a bastion of Old-World religious culture. We never went in there, and "they" never came into the store.

One day, I noticed a huge pile of books placed next to the dumpster that served both tenants of the building. Hating to see books thrown away, I loaded them all into the back of my car and brought them home.

The books were old, beautifully bound, and heavy. When I got home I began to sort them out. Here are a few of the titles:

VINE'S Expository Bible Dictionary
Strong's Exhaustive Concordance
Introductory New Testament Greek
Interlinear Greek New Testament
The Writings of Martin Luther
Complete Commentaries of Matthew Henry
Several Bibles in different Translations
Several Tomes on Church History
Hymnals
and, my personal favorite:
A Harmony of The Gospels.

There were many more, as they had filled the entire trunk of my hatchback Pinto! I sorted the books out and began to study. I never did learn NT Greek as well as I would have liked, but "The Harmony of the Gospels" gave me a wonderful perspective. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were arranged chronologically in four columns across the page, and matching incidents were lined up next to each other. It was so elegant and logical! I loved that book. As we look at the "Shared Meal" in Scripture, we can see how the stories line up as well. It is not so much redundancy as it is "digging deeper".

To this day, I can't imagine why anybody could throw those books away. The Denomination that did this has since drifted into a total apostasy of liberalism, so I guess it was kind of symbolic. Oh Well...my B-I-L now treasures those books in his Theology Library up in Maine.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart from generation to generation. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance..” Psalm 33 NASB
