Church: Cardinal McCarrick Is A Molester
The American Conservative ^ | 06-20-2018 | Rod Dreher

This has been a very long time coming:

Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, D.C., has been removed from public ministry after a credible allegation he abused a teen 50 years ago while serving as a priest in New York Archdiocese.

More:

Innocence? I believe McCarrick is lying, and that he knows he is lying. I have been waiting for this story to break since 2002.

Back then, I received a tip from a priest who had gone on his own dime to Rome, along with a group of prominent US Catholic laymen, to meet with an official for the Roman Curial congregation that names bishops. It had been rumored at the time that Theodore McCarrick, the Archbishop of Newark, was going to be moved to Washington, DC, and to be made a cardinal. This group traveled to Rome to warn the Vatican that McCarrick was a sexual harrasser of seminarians. The story this priest shared with me was that McCarrick had a habit of compelling seminarians to share his bed for cuddling. These allegations did not involve sexual molestation, but were clearly about unwanted sexual harassment. To refuse the archbishop’s bedtime entreaties would be to risk your future as a priest, I was told.

Rome was informed by these laymen — whose number included professionally distinguished Catholics in a position to understand the kind of harm this would cause –that McCarrick was sexually exploiting these seminarians, but it did no good. McCarrick received his appointment to the Washington archdiocese in 2000.

Percentage wise there is no difference in abuse by clergy among Catholics than there is among Protestant clergy. Catholic Church has the money so you hear about them more.

Does the other clergy cover it up? Do the other churches invoke canon law as superior to state and federal law? Do these other pedos get a cushy job in Rome to serve out their crime? Do they get to hide behind the walls of some pedo rehab hospital in Baltimore? Do they threaten District Attornies, cops, and their families with financial ruin.

The problem with the “deniers” is not that they do it at a rate higher than anyone else...it’s that they cover it up, the move them around, and they tell little kids their souls will burn in Hell for telling.

What don’t you understand about the institutional abuse that takes place to this day? All of those things have happen in just one diocese that I live in. Over forty years with at least four different bishops.

So yes, the Catholic Church is different. Is every priest a homo? I haven’t met every one yet. But i’ve Met more who were than weren’t. Even the nuns can’t stand them

The article isn’t saying what you’re pushing. Re-read it a bit closer.

I tell ya.....the lengths you’ll go to protect your denomination is amazing. Perhaps if you’d turn your attention to fixing the problem the RCC would get something done on this issue.

REGARDLESS of what church one attends, the members of the clergy must be above reproach. Scriptures demand it.

Disagree with the facts all you want. If Rome didn’t have a problem we wouldn’t be having these threads would we?

I agree all men serving in leadership in His church should be held to the highest standard.

But realize that other churches not just the RCC are dealing with this horrible issue as well.

Never said they weren’t. IMHO the difference is how these things are handled. It is well attested Roman Catholicism has a serious problem within its clergy including the highest levels of leadership. Many Roman Catholics seemingly continue to try to minimize or dismiss this.

Care to provide evidence for this charge? Canon law has fundamentally different penalties and a broader definition of criminal behavior. (E.g., Absolving an accomplice in a sexual sin in the confessional is a grave crime in canon law, but civil law doesn't care about it at all.)

Canon law and civil law aren't in conflict, but canon law can't send a man to prison while civil law lacks the competence to remove a man from the priesthood ... as it should be in both cases.

IMHO the difference is how these things are handled.

There's no shortage of cases where these abominations have been hushed up in Protestant churches. The stories of many of them have been posted to the religion forum. Human beings, not just Catholic human beings, do evil stuff like this.

"Let the one among you who is without sin, cast the first stone."

I've never said some cases haven't been hushed up. What I will say is there is not an institutionalized attempt to cover up the problem as witnessed in Roman Catholicism.

The Vatican, and we know there are even problems there, should issue a statement detailing the problem and outlining how the problem will be handled.

This will cause some people to lose jobs. It will also cause embarrassment for Rome and I think the later is the bigger concern of Rome at this point.

It may be Reformation II for Rome.

This morning I had read an article written by the most recent past head of the SBC in regards to the sexual abuse allegations. After reading a few paragraphs I had to stop and I had to say welcome to my 🌎 world.

I sense a growing unease by those Catholics I do Bible study with in regards to Pope Francis.

Yes. I’ve read the article as well. You may note that he was removed from whatever leadership position he held. I will add some of the allegations are a bit questionable. Some aren’t harassment.....just dumb statements.

If a member of the Catholic clergy has broken the law they need to be prosecuted.
