Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Shared Meal

(New Testament)

Matthew 15

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”

25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

(End of Scripture Passage)

This story is seldom read in church, as it would seem on the surface that Jesus is being mean to a Gentile Woman who comes to Him for help. But, of course, Jesus knew where the conversation would go even before it began, and the repartee was necessary to show a number of important pouts.

1. Jesus was a Jew, and had come as a fulfillment of Jewish Prophecy.

2. Up to now, the Jews and Gentiles were separate, and there was enmity between them.

3. Salvation would now be for ALL people, Jews and Gentiles, but it would be by Faith, and each person would be called individually, not as a "race" or ethnic group.

And so, the child was healed, but a very important lesson was shared at the same time.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

At the end of the last century there was a TV show that went on for nine years that was "about nothing". It was a huge hit, and memes show up on the Internet constantly that are quotes from the show. Whether one enjoyed the show or not, it was immensely popular and sometimes strayed into intimate or salacious subject matter. The next day, everybody would be talking about it.

The stars of the show went their separate ways after the show ran its course. Jerry Seinfeld, the star of the show, went back to his original profession, "Stand-Up Comic".

Now, for decades, the most popular venues for a Stand-Up Comic were the College Campuses. In this environment, the Stand-Up Comic was free to be much more "edgy" than under the strictures of Broadcast Media. He was not governed by the FCC or Studio Executives, and could try out his more outrageous material. But Jerry was in for a rude surprise when he went back into his original venue.

A lot had happened on College Campuses in the nine years that Jerry had become a TV Star. Political Correctness had taken over, and Jerry's jokes...all of them...were offensive to SOMEBODY, Somewhere. Sexual jokes were offensive to Women, "Gay" jokes were offensive to the LGBTQI advocates, political jokes were offensive to whatever political party was being discussed, jokes about jobs were offensive to the unemployed, jokes about ethnic groups or religions were offensive to everybody. Even jokes about "Everyday Life" were offensive to those who were not "privileged." Eventually, Jerry Seinfeld, a huge TV Star and Celebrity, had to cancel all campus appearances and seek gigs elsewhere. Other comedians have followed suit.

And yet, late-night comics who spew hatred and venom seem to be immune to this dilemma. Why? The answer is that the late-night guys are not really comics. They are just propaganda vehicles for the Left.

When the Canaanite Woman approached Jesus about her daughter, she was crossing a line. It was "politically incorrect" for her to even approach a Jewish Man, especially a Rabbi. Right away, she was demonstrating courageous Faith by even making an appearance. Jesus was also being "Politically Incorrect" when he used the example of "giving children's bread to the dogs". "Dog" was an epithet for a Gentile, so He was making a very "inappropriate" pun at this woman's expense. It wasn't very nice of Him at all! But then, the woman counters the "Dog" comment, by turning it into a real dog, a puppy under the children's table! She was a terrific lady who could take a joke and return it. And her daughter got healed! Can you imagine if the town had cancelled Jesus appearance there because He was politically incorrect?

O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God!
For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads. They lay crafty plans against your people; they consult together against your treasured ones. They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!” For they conspire with one accord; against you they make a covenant—the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; Asshur also has joined them; they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. Selah
Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, who were destroyed at En-dor, who became dung for the ground. Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, who said, “Let us take possession for ourselves of the pastures of God.”
O my God, make them like whirling dust, like chaff before the wind. As fire consumes the forest, as the flame sets the mountains ablaze, so may you pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your hurricane! Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek your name, O Lord. Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever; let them perish in disgrace, that they may know that you alone, whose name is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth. Psalm 83

PC and selective outrage service only to silence dissent and muzzle free speech.

And most offensive of all—the Gospel. Especially in a society where good is evil...evil is good.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for revival in our beloved America.
