Perhaps the Southern Baptist Convention has its own swamp to drain. Just sayin'. This country is in the mess it is in because the churches have been fence sitting. President Trump and Vice-President Pence in my opinion have been put in office "for such a time as this."

#1: "This country is in the mess it is in because the churches have been fence sitting."

Isn't there an IRS rule that says any church involved with a political candidate loses it's nonprofit status?

Of course that rule only applies to Republicans. Rev. Jackson, and Rev. Sharpton, and all de rebrens violate this rule with impunity.

Of course the SBC has no problem when Obama campaigned at Baptist churches. That’s “unity”

I actually disagree, they have decided to side with evil.

If they wanted a sermon why did they invite the Vice President? Did they expect him to talk about heaven?
This is a childish and disturbing reaction, hiding behind rhetoric rather than standing up for the president and his team for their commitment to renew the power and importance of religion, and especially Christianity, in our government.

If they don’t want to mix with politics then it’s their fault for inviting him in the first place. What did they want him to do? Baptize people? Give a full on sermon. He’s not a pastor.

And I agree that God has appointed and anointed both Trump, Pence, their families, and the members of their administration “for such a time as this.” And Christians should be immensely GRATEFUL to GOD for their leadership because the implications have been HUGE and not everyone (including far more “holy” people) would have heeded the call or answered with much boldness as Trump has.

The clergy is as much to blame as the crooked politicians.

Edmund Burke said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Now is the time for all good men to pull up their pants and begin to do what needs to be done.
Thank you, President Trump! GOD bless you.

He’s an ass, but he seems very stylish.

And despite everyone’s attempts, Baptists recognize no “leader” outside their individual congregation. He does not lead a “denomination”. That was a dear goal of the fundamentalist crowd (calling themselves “conservatives”) that took over. They wanted a hierarchy badly, along with their 4000 year old earth. The SBC is merely a cooperative for missions, funding universities, etc.

They invited a politician to talk and he talked about politics. Shocking.

“The gospel of King Jesus is not tied to any American political party.”

No, but one political party works overtime to attack Jesus and the Gospel. One political party openly promotes sin and attacks anyone who preaches from the Bible.

The SBC doesn’t have a leader. It has over 45,000 churches who unite for missions and seminaries. And if I had my way, we would unite for missions and dump the seminaries. But no one has the right to speak on behalf of the SBC. 45,000+ independent churches.

Well in a way; it is not surprising. Wasn’t Jimmah Carter one of them at one time?

The Baptist leaders already tried to IGNORE the collapsing world around them, and instead spend all their time in the Bible, and now we’re at the point where boys are competing against girls in what was girls athletics, winning in those competitions, and then showering with those same girls - while their boys are now being ACTIVELY RECRUITED by gays, who are brought into the schools under the guise of teaching ‘tolerance’ and ‘anti-bullying’.

I’d say the Baptists should KICK OUT any leader who says that they should stay neutral on these issues and never stick their heads out of the Bible...because the OTHER SIDE certainly has no plans to leave their kids alone.

“There’s no denying the decline of America’s largest Protestant denomination any longer. The SBC lost almost 78,000 members in the past year...Southern Baptists have now lost a million members since their peak of 16.3 million in 2003.

The denomination is down to its “lowest baptisms since 1946; lowest membership since 1990; lowest worship attendance since 1996,”...

“It’s clear that evangelism and discipleship are waning,” Thom Rainer, president and CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources...

In the American Conservative last week, George Hawley, politics professor at the University of Alabama, suggested the Religious Right was to blame for the decline of evangelical denominations including Southern Baptists....”

Part of the problem with the SBC is too many people in the overhead believe it is a business. No man controls the growth of the SBC because no man can convert any other man to Christ. The Spirit moves, and we don’t control Him!

I’d be happy to see our church withdraw from the SBC. We could still give to missions. But the hand-wringers in the SBC administration are more focused on “success” than on obeying God and preaching His word. A bunch of namby-pamby wimps trying to social justice growth into the SBC rather than measuring our success by our faithfulness!

I read once upon a time in the South a new person in town would be asked, “Are you a Baptist or a Republican?”

Despite that many not really familiar with Christendom in America often characterize Baptists as being conservative, in fact many of them are very leftist - I refuse to abuse the term liberal - politically, and often socially.

I attended a “non-denominational” prep school. Such are functionally a denomination unto themselves, but they tend consistently to be Armenian quasi-Baptist in theology, and many of the students and parents are moderately to very leftist. As a conservative and a Lutheran, I was not well tolerated.

I have known many Baptists, and most of them have been Democrats. My best friend - who attended an SBC seminary - was one such, and his politics and theology became so extremely leftist with time that it ended our decades-long friendship.

Jimmy Carter was/is not an outlier. His superficial social conservatism is merely a veneer over his Cultural Marxism.

You are exactly right! I am a Southern Baptist and in a politically divided church, wonderful in many ways, and I can safely say that my Pastor, Adult Pastor, Children’s and Teen’s Pastor are all conservatives, but they dare not speak too plainly about this because I live in the most liberal county in my state and quite a few of the very active people in my church do not like President Trump. Even I measure my words in my SS Class, for one of my SS Sisters is a retired school teacher and very liberal, yet, she is a good person otherwise, but very misguided after long years in an academic family and through her experience in the Teacher’s union, etc. The Southern Baptist Association has had this political conflict for years. It may be worse now because the leadership has grown up in a world of materialism and political correctness. I hope the SBC will not go the way of the Catholic Church. As long as we continue to love our neighbors and to understand that we are sinners saved by grace and to love God with all our hearts, perhaps we will not fail in the Great Commission. That remains to be seen, though.

Guaranteed that Russell Moore is behind this. He wrote a book “Onward” a few years ago. The first half of the book takes the position that the protestant church has watered down its witness by becoming too associated with conservative, republican politics and that’s not the proper place of a church. Further, he argued the Christian should not be locked at the hip to any political affiliation but should stick to the Gospel of Jesus. To some degree, I appreciated the point he was making, but in the second half of the book he pretty much argues the church has an obligation to take the side of liberal positions and politics. He’s just trying to take the church down the progressive SJW political path. We see that in the far left editorials he often has published in the Washington Post, particularly on the issue of illegal immigration.
