Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Most of the "Three-Deckers" in Dorchester were graced with two large porches for each apartment: one in front and one in back. The one in front was mostly ornamental, but the one in back was part of the living space. In the days before clothes dryers, the back porch was for hanging clothes on the clotheslines strung between the rafters. During the hot summer months, the kitchen table got moved onto the porch, and during the worst sweltering nights of summer, people even slept out there.

Every Autumn, something strange happened. The back porches of our Jewish Neighbors suddenly sprouted strange-looking temporary huts, decorated like a Christmas Tree with branches and lights, fruits and flowers. One of my friends explained to me that it was called a "sukkah" and represented the 40 years of wandering in the desert. Uh...OK. Meanwhile, we prepared for Thanksgiving, not having a clue that the two holidays were related.

Nearly a quarter-century later, I visited Israel during the festive time. Everybody had the little huts in their yards, and there were huge ones for the public at the Western Wall and on Mt. Zion. The restaurants and cafes erected them for their guests, and in Haifa, the High-Rise apartment buildings had them on the little balconies that jut out from each apartment...all the way up. The culmination of this wonderful holiday is Simchat Torah (The Joy of the Torah) which signifies the last reading in the yearly calendar of the Reading of the Torah...meaning that tomorrow we start over with Genesis One. Religious people celebrate THIS event by dancing in the streets carrying the Scrolls with their beautiful coverings. I had the privilege of enjoying this spectacle, in the Sukkah, at the Western Wall, on my 32nd Birthday! (BEST BIRTHDAY PARTY EVAH!) The Holiday of Sukkot (Also known as The Feast of Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths) is one of the most joyous "shared meals" on the whole Jewish Calendar.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Christ Is Risen. He is Risen Indeed.

God Bless America!

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

_ ND the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

On the first day shall be an holy convo-
cation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein.

These are the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day:

Beside the sabbaths of the LORD, and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill offerings, which ye give unto the LORD.

Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath.

And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.

And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths:

That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

And Moses declared unto the children of Israel the feasts of the LORD.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
